Volcker set to call for reform of UN leadership
Financial Times (UK) ^ | September 5 2005 | Mark Turner

The UN’s leadership needs comprehensive and urgent reform following a failure of management in Iraq’s oil-for-food programme, the Volcker inquiry is expected to say this week.

“The main conclusions are unambiguous,” says a copy of the committee’s summary, seen in advance by the Financial Times. “The organisation requires stronger executive leadership, thoroughgoing administrative reform, and more reliable controls and auditing.” The report says “ethical lapses” and weakness in the programme’s management were “symptomatic of systematic problems in the UN administration generally”.

It warns that the UN’s ability to do its job depends on its maintaining an image of competence, honesty and accountability. “It is precisely those qualities that too often were absent in the administration of the oil-for-food programme.”

Oh, yeah, this'll happen.

First, they're a government, and all governments try to hide their thievery from the public.

Second, they're unelected with no responsibility to anyone and therefore uncontrolled.

If you think US businesses needed the Sarbanes-Oxley controls, then you'll be convinced that a similar measure is needed here.

But we won't get it.

Any time you have an organization spending billions of dollars with no, repeat NO controls or audits, you get corruption. Guaranteed.

All spending authority must be removed from the UN and they should be required to outsource all expenditure activities so the results can be audited.

Bolton has them running scared. They're trying to save their behinds by beating him to the punch, but they won't do it.

“There is a tremendous, seething resistance in the organization, a wish that all this would go away and that it could settle back into comfortable mediocrity again.”

"settle back into comfortable mediocrity again.”

Don't hurt their feelings John.

There is going to be a great uprising here in the good'ol'USofA, and I'm not talking about the gangstas'. It will be the honest citizens(legal) that will put an end to this. Mark my words.

LOL. I do love that. Now just think how hard Biden and Dodd worked to keep Bolton out of the UN, and ponder why that was.

the UN needs new quarters. I say we give 'em the Superdome and throw in the Convention Center for good luck. And if theres another hurricane we'll show them what a REAL delay looks like!
