Tensions color Bush, Blanco meeting

Gov. Kathleen Blanco canceled a scheduled trip Monday to visit Louisiana evacuees in Houston shelters to stay in Baton Rouge to meet with President Bush. Blanco Communications Director Bob Mann said the governor did not learn about the Bush visit until early Monday morning. “We had no idea the president was coming,” Mann said.

Tension between the Blanco and Bush administrations has surfaced in recent days as state and federal officials try to coordinate recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Blanco administration clearly wanted to express their irritation with the communication about the president's trip. Blanco officials said they had heard that the president might make a visit and had been trying to get details.

As of late Sunday night, FEMA officials told Blanco that the president was not planning a visit, Mann said. One key point of coordination is the military effort to restore order and begin rebuilding infrastructure.

As of Monday morning, the National Guard from Louisiana and other states had deployed 13,268 troops in the 13 parish area affected by the storm, Louisiana National Guard spokesman Pete Schneider said. In route are 7,845 more National Guardsmen, so that by Tuesday morning 21,113 guardsmen will be in Louisiana.

Parallel to that effort, the regular Army 82nd Airborne and 1st Cavalry divisions are sending in 7,000 troops to Louisiana to arrive in the next couple of days.

"I'm not even sure that many people will be left in Louisiana"

Interesting question, Dude. Most of the law is open on that point (who can be reached to vote in a statutory manner). Probably would tilt to Blank0's favor, e.g., post-Katrina NO refugees have been collected and deposited in hard addresses (the USPS has given the Astrodome its own zip code) whereas the people who left NO pre-Katrina have scattered to the four winds.

Your words "we will learn from this, and do better next time" are very true.

Even in my little corner of the world, this has taught me not to count on the luxury of having communications in a disaster.....it may take a week or longer to know what is happening. I'll be getting a battery radio. Also, three days of food/water is crazy....we need to keep a lot more on hand.

Incompetence of La Gov and NO Mayor put whole country at risk with crippled transportation system and curtailed energy production, whole US should be able to petition to recall the governor

In her praise of Houston and the generosity and care they're providing, Greta today told Cavuto some of the big names who had visited.......on her list was clinton and Hillary.

Blanco is too dense to realize that Bush has effectively taken control because there was no one else to do the job. His silence to her about his plans speaks volumes, but she is too dumb to hear it. It's a Get Outa the Way kind of thing.

It doesn't matter. You can't get 33.3% of the population of a state to sign a petition to support a resolution supporting sunny days. Better off trying to twist the arms of the legislature to force her to resign or impeach her. And that is given the fact that Dems are quick to circle the wagons. Still easier than a petition drive.

Maybe that's why Algore showed up in LA but refused to talk to reporters and then disappeared. He's ...."On a Mission!"

Even the most loyal Democrat would not call Algore for "help".

But note that Bush has enlisted Bill Clinton's help. This keeps him from joining in the Bush bashing. This is what happens when you don't burn your bridges. Even somebody as reprehensible as Bill Clinton can be useful.

This keeps him from joining in the Bush bashing.

It hasn't stopped his wife, who was recognized at today's media event. And in the end, my guess is it will not stop him either.

Yeah, I'm sorry Kathleen, but the people don't need another goddamn cryfest, ok? Get your pad and pencil, be in the room at 7:30... It's time for "Being a Leader 101", pass/fail course, and you have one more week to complete it! God Lord, this woman sucks!

Please do not use this kind of language. It is extremely offensive.

Good afternoon.
"Gore looked like a torticollis patient on huge doses of steroids."

AlGore certainly looked like he was about to fly into a steroid induced rage.

Perhaps he was trying to express shock and sympathy, or perhaps he was expressing his anger at W, but he just looked like he was pissed that he had to be there at all.

I apologize, I guess the hypocritical one-sidedness is just getting a bit frustrating and I'm sorry for offending, I didn't mean to...

Looking back at the post, I guess there were probably 3 or 4 that came across offensive... Which one put it over the edge?? : )

For the time being. But remembering that we are dealing with the most vindictive, duplicitous people ever to occupy the people's mansion, it would not surprise me in the slightest to see him publicly criticize the President.

The point is that if he does so, he's criticizing himself. If you understand that Clinton only acts in his own interest, you see that this is a way to make his interest Bush's. It won't make criticism impossible, just difficult.

In what way? He can criticize FEMA and the Federal response while portraying himself as just trying to help raise money for a worthy cause.

I just don't trust this man any further than I can throw him, and I expect you don't either.

"she was either asleep at the wheel or sniffing glue!!!"

Not necessarily an either/or scenario..... let's say she was probably "asleep at the wheel AFTER sniffing glue!"
