There was no one to tell them. The Mayor was in Baton Rouge with his buddies and the gov was busy making excuses why she wasn't responsible.

Doesn't sound very convincing. I don't think there is anyone I trust anymore.

Why is it people aren't talking about the fact that it was the local government that told people to go to the Superdome thereby making the safety of those people THEIR responsibility?

Thursday Soledad O'Brien was giving Mike Brown a really hard time about the people in the Convention Center and he raised his voice and said,
"Soledad WE DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS ANYBODY IN THE CONVENTION CENTER UNTIL TODAY. As soon as we found out we sent food and water over there"

The 'honorable' Mayor and Governor are going to get totally reamed if there is ever an honest investigation.

The plan on the part of the state officials was to let the people fend for themselves and hit the federal government for money afterward. I think they have been viewing the hurricanes as oppotunities get some dough. Look at the way they've behaved through this whole thing, and tell me they're anything but greedy tax whores.

In all truthfulness, Chertoff needed to know what he was dealing with in the criminally negligent cadre of Nagin and Blanco.
There is some blame for the one who left "the retarded kid directing traffic at the scene of the accident" for so long.

Mr. Chertoff said neither he nor Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown was told of the deteriorating situation in New Orleans until Thursday night.Hate to say it, but that really sounds stupid.

I think if any mistakes were made by FEMA and the rest of the federal government, it was the assumption that the local and state governments were working in the best interests of their citizens during the emergency situation.
It was unfathomable to me as I watched the mayor haggle with lawyers over his responsibilities and options when he should have merely been executing well laid plans. I fell into further disbelief as I watched a governor overcome with emotion instead of showing steadfast leadership in a time of crisis. If I hadn't watched it happen, I would have a hard time believing the levels of incompetence and dereliction that caused so many to die.

Chertoff is not going to take the blame for this fiasco.
Too many on this board have been calling for his head.
Please try not to allow the media to spin the truth against this administration.
Everyone from the Bush administration I have seen on TV has been excellent and that includes (surprisingly)Mineta.

Although the problems were being reported by the media, it's apparent now, that no one had been taking the media seriously. The media, that has cried wolf so many times, now were not to be believed! The end of MSM!

Mr. Chertoff said neither he nor Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown was told of the deteriorating situation in New Orleans until Thursday night.
CNN had video on-air at 8am Thursday morning from the CC by their transcripts. Paula Zahn, Koppel, and another major news source (can't recall at the moment) all asked some very tough questions on this to FEMAman (Brown). He kept saying that FEMA was only notified sometime on Thursday. In a few statements, he emphasized they were only officially notified on Thursday. Then he gave another interview where he was saying that they had been sheltered and fed every day but I think he might have been confusing CC with Superdome on that one. But it sounded really stupid and inadequate. The CC was a designated evac point and rescuers were directed to bring rescued people there for evac.
Chertoff may not deserve a lot of blame here but FEMA's Brown needs to be fired and replaced.

Mr. Chertoff said neither he nor Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown was told of the deteriorating situation in New Orleans until Thursday night. I was in Mexico and able to find CNN (in English) and I knew on Wednesday.
How could he NOT know until Thursday night?
