New Orleans' local newspaper, the Times-Picayune, is blasting President Bush for his handling of response to Hurricane Katrina, and is calling for heads to roll within his administration.

"Every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be fired, Director Michael Brown especially," the paper states today in an open letter to Bush in its print edition.

Let's start by firing their worthless mayor, and the state's incompetent governor.

Thats the ticket right there !

Sorry, but you are wrong, they might have seemed slow, but the truth is that Governor Blanco and her staff have stood in their way at every step

How true that is. I'll never forget the Larry King show last Wednesday which showed a split screen: Blanco live on one side and looting videos on the other. Larry King would keep asking about the looting, but Mayor Blanco answered his questions as if she did not hear him...it's as if she was in complete denial about the looting. Probably because she was afraid it was politically incorrect to do so as most of the looters were black (IMO).

Every FEMA official?

Even the ones that have nothing to do with NOLA?

And what about the local and state government? No problem there?

Donations that I make will strictly benefit Mississippi, where the people are picking themselves up and doing what they need to do rather than holding out their hands and whining that "the government" isn't doing enough.

Well, there complaining in Mississip' too, but there isn't enough MSM reporters to go around to hear all the whining!

Yet, I was thinking the same thing....send my money to those efforts directly involved in Mississip' and 'bama, and let NO go back to the gators...at least the people of ole Miss ain't shootin' and lootin' like it was Mardi Gras in September.

By the way....send the money to the Salvation Army....as far as I can tell, the Red Cross isn't doing a whole bunch down there. (Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...)

I don't know if the President has the power to do this, but if he did he should Fire the Governor and the Mayor, have them executed or deported.

FEMA's job starts around 24 hours after the end of the event. They need reports by the state to indicate what is required and where to put forces. The city and state in this case...delivered zero. The city couldn't even muster evacuation of the residents...and used the SuperDome as the solution...which was ok for 12 hours...but it never used meant to be a 72-hour solution. Even if you had 1,000 Guardsmen in Baton Rouge at the start of the hurricane...I doubt seriously that anything would have been different.

And one must ask the biggest question...if another hurricane whips up next week against Florida...will we have the same results?

The Office of Civil Defense should be reinstated, and FEMA eliminated.

My thoughts EXACTLY!!!!

Analogy: imagine the media covering the Titanic sinking, and focusing on the slow rescue, but never ever mentioning the lifeboat issue.

Great comment.

"i didn't see that FEMA had done such a bad job either, particularly since local governments are told they must shoulder the burden for 72 to 96 hours before the Federal Government can get there."

I am looking at this from a number of different angles. The evacuation was 16 hours in advance and was MANDATORY. FEMA did their job, it is up to the state and locals to enforce the evacuation. The reality is that some people, the old and the sick could not get out and that is tragic. The whole thing sucks. But I wonder how many people died or almost died by not listening to the mandatory evacuation?

A federal re-occupation of LA would do it....since they are obviously totally inept and incompetent, perhaps Bush needs to install a military govenor (and mayor) to help things move along.

New Orleans is in a hole surrounded by water that can only stay dry if pumps run 24/7 to keep the water out. The city is sinking and eventually will be under water again.

Why clean it up? It's just going to fill up with water again.

I'm with you. Common decency would be to move a dead body to a quiet corner and cover it. Make the old people as comfortable as possible. Use some of those blankets as shade for the women with children. Those big screaming men should be ashamed of themselves. Now Jesse was on tv today complaining and he will continue asking for reparations I am sure.In the whole convention center was there not one broom.

"In the whole convention center was there not one broom.

Yeah, if they can loot TVs, sneakers, jewelry, etc., WHY couldn't someone (all those able-bodied men) "loot" a broom or two and sweep up that trash that they ALL sat in. HOW could people sit right in the midst of and on all that trash??? Unbelievable!!! All the scenes of where people were gathering showed unbelievable piles of trash and garbage EVERYWHERE! And they sat and slept in it! Amazing! What kind of people are they??

There was already the question raised on how New Orleans can afford the 20% copay on the 80% FEMA aid...

You could say, their credit is under water.

And the amazing thing is that they draw thousands of tourists each year, and could have taxed them at the airport and the hotel...plus the local bars. They could raise the money necessary in 2 or 3 years.
