(CNN) -- The Supreme Court released statements by seven Supreme Court justices who paid tribute to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who died Saturday. A statement from Justice David Souter is not expected, the court said.
Justice John Paul Stevens:
"William Rehnquist's independent, impartial and dedicated leadership of the Supreme Court has been an inspiration to those of us privileged to serve with him -- and to the entire nation as well. Charles Evans Hughes, a great chief justice whom he particularly admired, would have been proud of the example he set as the leader of the court.
"He was truly the first among equals in discharging his judicial duties in a prompt, scholarly and fair manner. He was a good friend, maintaining his sense of humor and proportion throughout the difficult period that marked his most recent service. We shall miss him."

It's only an attack on his personal life if you hate gays.
By all accounts she's a nice person. Mark Levin said on Hannity yesterday that her and her family socialize with Scalia and his family.
If Justice Souter is making decisions under threat that is important, but how could one possibly know if that were true?
When I asked the question, I didn't know if it was at matter of record or not. This sounds like it isn't a matter of record.
Frankly, if Justice Souter is gay, it would probably be better for him to out himself now that sodomy is no longer a crime due to a Supreme Court ruling.
Agreed. I'm reminded though of a story in Bob Woodward's book "The Brethren" in which a liberal Supreme Court justice died back in the 1970s. They asked a clergyman to give a eulogy and the clergyman said "I didn't know the man. Is there anything I could see that would help me find the words to say about him?"
So they led the minister to the justice's office where he found several books and, inside the books, were underlined passages. So the clergyman tried to incorporate the passages into his eulogy.
So as the remaining justices gathered along with Washington heavyweights, the minister delivered his eulogy and one justice nudged the other, pointed to the podium and said "He doesn't know, does he?"
"Know what?"
"The justice always underlined things he vehemently disagreed with."
Been here 8 days and you're telling others to leave, huh? Pretty brazen for a newbie, dontcha think?
It is labor day weekend, everyone and everything is down and out in New England till Tuesday morning.
No comment from this quarter is necessary or acceptable on any non vacation matter until the day after tomorrow.
Suck it up and give the boy a moment.
i didnt tell anyone to leave...might want to go back and read that one more time
Justice Souter was last seen running for his life from a mob of angry American citizen/property owners.
It didn't come out of nowhere, it came out of my big mouth.
LOL!
(I like to understand things and all the things that bear on them.)
<< we may never understand why liberals think the way they do but to simply account it to there [sic] "possible sexuality" is low ... >>
Liberals do not think, they "feel."
And, like it or not and notwithstanding that one's saying so is as likely as not to see one burnt at the stake of the Modern Inquisition we call "PC" -- abnormality as opposed to normality in matters sexual has an immense affect upon Human Beings.
by the way...judging by your about page, you must be losing the debate
but i have been told that i am a pretty brazen yound individual
I'm a pretty brazen old individual.
Wait a few years and you can join my club.
How young?? You have done well so far. Welcome to FR.
18...trying to convert my fellow age group...stupid 18-24 year old voters tend to think it is cool to bash bush
its alright, cant wait that long...
From what I read she has a heavy anti family and anti male ideology.
I'll take back my comment and read with a more open mind.
Thanks for your response.
Souter is probably fretting about where he will live after his property is condemned under eminent domain to be replaced by the Lost Liberty Hotel.
