Justices pay tribute to Rehnquist (all except Souter, who refuses to issue statement)

(CNN) -- The Supreme Court released statements by seven Supreme Court justices who paid tribute to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who died Saturday. A statement from Justice David Souter is not expected, the court said.

Justice John Paul Stevens:

"William Rehnquist's independent, impartial and dedicated leadership of the Supreme Court has been an inspiration to those of us privileged to serve with him -- and to the entire nation as well. Charles Evans Hughes, a great chief justice whom he particularly admired, would have been proud of the example he set as the leader of the court.

"He was truly the first among equals in discharging his judicial duties in a prompt, scholarly and fair manner. He was a good friend, maintaining his sense of humor and proportion throughout the difficult period that marked his most recent service. We shall miss him."

Souter has been mad since Justice Rehnquist kicked his rear in the 1998 All Court Greco Roman Wrestling Match.

I suspect maybe Justice Renquist often expressed his disapproval of Souter lying his way on the court. Or maybe Renquist froze Souter out of decisions he wished to write because of his lying his way onto the court.

Very insightful theory! It has already been established that Souter is a liar and the enemy of conservatives. I am hoping that W has learned the hard lessons of his father's mistakes. Conservatives are already roasting him over his non-existant immigration 'policy'. Time for W to grow some balls and reward his conservative supporters by creating a conservative Supreme Court.

This is a conservative forum where people are allowed to speak their minds. If it is too much for you to handle then perhaps you are right--maybe you should not be here. Nice having you here briefly and hope you find another forum that suits your taste.

If Souter is gay, that puts him in a small minority. Granting that scenario, he then becomes a person that makes decisions affecting the large majority. Telling us that it is none of the majority's business as to his sexual orientation is rather disingenuous.

I truly believe somebody has some serious dirt on this scumbag Souter.

There were good reasons why certain behavioral tendencies were once shunned for being intrinsically extortable. Avoiding these traits in potential judicial nominees is still good public policy.

Souter vs Rehnquist...........I think it all stems from a property rights joke that Rehnquist related to Souter.........ha

Here is the problem. The big gay organizations have been threatening to out Souter for several years and it is more than obvious that if he IS gay he did not want to be outed. That is the problem since that is where pressure can be brought to bear. I have no problem if he is gay BUT I do have a problem with the prospect of him making decisions under the threat of being outed.

but that same arguement can be then be used by the left into their probe into the adoption of Robert's children....i just dont see the need to probe a persons life...we now know he is liberal...that enough is resoning why he is brain-dead when it comes to making logical decisions

No, it is not sufficient reason.

He did not present himself as a liberal during his confirmation hearings. In other words, he lied.

Roberts??? Indeed, I hope the dems do a through grilling and background check on Roberts. That is their job.

When anyone seeks one of the highest posts in our government, they have to understand that they no longer have immunity from scrutiny.

The last Justice Roberts was appointed as a conservative republican and he turned out to be the best accomplice FDR had in government. So much for labels.
