(CNN) -- The Supreme Court released statements by seven Supreme Court justices who paid tribute to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who died Saturday. A statement from Justice David Souter is not expected, the court said.
Justice John Paul Stevens:
"William Rehnquist's independent, impartial and dedicated leadership of the Supreme Court has been an inspiration to those of us privileged to serve with him -- and to the entire nation as well. Charles Evans Hughes, a great chief justice whom he particularly admired, would have been proud of the example he set as the leader of the court.
"He was truly the first among equals in discharging his judicial duties in a prompt, scholarly and fair manner. He was a good friend, maintaining his sense of humor and proportion throughout the difficult period that marked his most recent service. We shall miss him."

Souter fashions himself to be libertarian , but is in fact merely a conventional liberal. His homosexuality may well be one explanation behind his previous deliberate misdirections toward BushI and Rudman, and everyone else.
i definetly dont want to please them...just not lower our selves to their level...esspecially how they accused robert's dancing kid of being gay...
You know, you're right and I wish someone would delete my earlier post. He was on the right side in the biggest case of my lifetime. Rehnquist saw through the phony gang rape story Roe spun the same way he did Souter's 3 am "jogs".

I do care if he decides the government can take take my home if they think it will increase their tax revenue..

In reading the full article, it's interesting to compare the personal voices of the Supremes. It sounds like they all agree Rehnquist was a fair, principled man with tremendous integrity.
Why no statement from Souter? Most likely, the two men held no respect for each other. Renquist probably challenged Souter for having a complete lack of integrity as to how he got on the Court. Ironically, I can imagine that Renquist would get along with a Guinsberg because she's maintained the integrity of consistency in her positions and did not change her judicial voice for a blatent power grab as Souter did. Souter may even see himself as the shadow-chief justice, writing key opinions when he's able to convince one of the "swingers" (O'Connor/Kennedy) to join his side.
If Souter's seen as a traitor and a liar in the general public, imagine how his colleagues see him, especially when he writes an opinion like Kelo. I bet the politics behind the scenes is much worse than anything we see.

What do you find "gay" about San Diego? The aircraft carriers moored there, the large numbers of navy personnel, or what? Give it up. I suspect Souter has not had one homo experience in his life. I suspect he is totally sublimated, and finds the sex act unaesthetic and distateful. I suspect he is incapable of forming any intimate relationship. It is just the way he was built. We all have to work with what we have.

It was pointed out to me by a gay grad student that San Diego is one of the many new/old gay "hot spots".
Single guys who take solo vacations to certain areas are just probably gay.(Not that there's anything wrong with that...ala Seinfeld)
Apparently there are varying levels of "gay friendly' places and San Diego ranks up there. It's not San Fran or Toronto, but it's got its own "gayness".
Like a minor league gaytown trying to find its role...
No offense is intended to you fine San Diegans...some things just are the way they are.
(Oddly, the new thing in gayness seems to be the Southern gay guy or the Texas gay guy, which strikes me as very odd indeed, but thats what they tell me....)

I think you about summed it up. :) I live up river a bit from San Diego. But Souter's real problem is not his sexual preference, whatever it is, but what I said. Being all along for so long, tends to affect one's good judgment, when it comes to how to parse the law as it pertains to those in dissimilar circumstances, absent a rather rigorous compartmentalization.
