This was posted on one of my favorite blogs. I'm hoping there are some FREEPERs near Covington, LA who can round up some food and help these Sisters.
Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends of Covington Carmel
Little Rocks Sister Camilla received the following this morning from Sister Edith of Covington:
Sister Edith of Covington Carmel called at 5:15am on a borrowed cell phone that was getting through. She wanted us to know how they were doing. The Carmelite friars left for Marylake last night (Wed.). The Benedictine Abbey near by asked the Nuns to take in some of their overflow refugees, especially one of the sick Fathers. The Sisters themselves are sleeping in cupboards to accommodate the guests. The big problem they are facing now is food since nothing can be bought. If anyone is heading down in their direction, please load up some food for them. Highway 55 through Jackson MS is open and get onto I-12 at Hammond which will take you into Covington, but take the exit from I-12 at Covington Point. Its a small subdivision just below the Carmel. Both ends of River Road are blocked. The whole situation is horrendous. Gangs with heavy guns stop the medical trucks with supplies and took all the drugs. You cannot imagine what its like.
Here in Arkansas hotels and many places have taken in refugees from LA and MS. Marylake and our Carmel have offered our places for Jackson Carmel, should they need to evacuate. Our law enforcement agencies and disaster relief vehicles have left to help LA and MS.
We will keep you updated on any further information we get. Prayers are still needed for these poor people and situations.
How about calling Fox news and connecting them with the nuns. Fox has been working hard on letting authorities know where people need help. Just a thought.
I love Dom's blog too! - one of my first stops in the morning.
Please someone call Fox and tell them of the sisters location-
Have you heard anything, yet, regarding the Covington Nuns?? praying here and hoping someone can help. The closest person I know is in Jackson, but I don't think he can get there.
It's an "old European" (or, rather, an American colloquialism by now) to use the word, "cupboard" to describe/define a closet.
So, the statement ("nuns...sleeping in cupboards...") probably means they are sleeping in closets.
Some folks in rural areas in the U.S. maintain the language of an older time, or, maintain the expressions that are still commonly in use in areas of Europe from whence their ancestors originated.
I don't know. I received this from another Catholic blog that I respect.
I did. No response back. I figured FREEPERS got better action. I was right, Thank God.
No, not yet. Left a message for my friend Jerry. hope to hear from him soon. Will let everyone know once I speak to him.
Incredible.
Prayers for the nuns.
Praying and bumping
Another bump for food.
There have to be some Catholic freepers in surrounding states who could respond quickly.
Also, Catholic Charities is taking donations. You'd think they could help.
LOUISIANA IS PREDOMINANTLY CATHOLIC. However, the Catholic church with immense wealth is letting everyone else pay to help a lot of their constituents. Absolutely unacceptable. Americans are so ignorant and gullible.
Update:
Help is on the way!! A reader of the Catholic list I work for that some of you might know, Mary Jo Anderson, is sending help and will have the sisters checked on daily.
Thank you all for your prayers and special thanks to rineux and siobahn for sending people on the groud.
FREEPERS RULE!!!!!
AFAIK the road is cleared and cell phone reception should be quite good in the area. Though incoming calls will work better than outgoing.
The local stores are all open from sunrise to sunset also.
To everyone that was concerned
it was a rumor that got started that caused a little panic with the police force down there.
As I mentioned on an earlier post, I could not believe the police or the KOC had not gone to check on the Abby and the Carmalites and so on.
The Sisters and for that matter the churches in the area are fine and were fine during the storm.
Power is still out but they are using generators. There is plenty of food and water and the police check on them every so offen.
Some of the area in Covington has power and stores are opening as well as gas stations.
Hope this update helps and sorry it took so long to get back with CKAJ.

This doesn't pass the smell test.
