EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.
When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.
Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."
With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

The guy had his heart in the right place. It's where the head is located on his body that made for an unfortunate voyage.
It would be funny if there's a photoshop of Penn as Gilligan, Gov. Blanco as Ginger or Mrs Thurston Howell III, the Lt Gov as the Skipper, and the Mayor as the Professor.

On the one hand I'm glad to see he kept his stupid mouth shut (unlike Celine Dion) and decided to actually do something to help the situation rather than inflame it, otoh, I find it amusing that he didn't bother to check the boat for leaks before venturing out to SAVE LIVES. Sheesh guy, wake up and smell the coffee.

I think he was there for two reasons, to find his missing friends that live there and to exploit this horrible tragedy for political and for personal reasons as in fame and monetary gain. He usually does have a photographer with him but he also has historian and author, Douglas Brinkley as part of his entourage...how long before Penn and Brinkley release a "Michael Moore" type documentary and book?

No I don't. Idiots like this rush into a disaster area and cause resources to be diverted from where they are needed to bail out the idiots. If he wanted to help, he should have asked one of the team leaders. He could have helped out by shoveling shit or something, but noooo, he wanted to be a hero. I give him credit for being a narcissistic moron.
Geraldo is always dropping comments about his sailboat, so he should feel right at home floating through N.O. Just can't figure out why but he makes me want to shoot a spitball at him.

in an interview, Trey Parker (I think), said that he got some nasty letters from stars that were mocked in that movie and that based on the letter from Sean Penn, he was portrayed pretty accurately in the movie
