EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.
When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.
Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."
With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"
it proves you can take a guy out of hollywood, but you can't take hollywood out of the guy.
with all on the boat, he forgot to bring someone with a brain.
I can't seem to come up with any appreciation for Sean Penn at this moment. Had their not been a photographer in his entourage, perhaps I could find some appreciation for his efforts. His rescue mission wasn't about saving anyone...it was about him trying to make himself look wonderful to the world.

I'd be willing to buy a boat with a hole in it and a life vest (for me!) and rescue him!
Then again , how big are the places in Malibu? How many houses do the stars own?( It must take 2 or 3 mansions to house Michael Moore.)
Maybe Barbara Streisand could take in some storm survivors in her mansion? They could help hang her laundry on clothes lines to save energy- like she has instructed the rest of us little people to do.
Oh, wait, don't John and Theresa Kerry have 5 mansions? Maybe some displaced families could live in them, and have some rum soaked raisins with Mama T.
Wonderful to see "the crusaders for the poor" , rushing to help the victims of Katrina.(Sarcasm:ON)
He misunderstood the mission. Cindy actually invited him there to protest the National Guard.
