MEMO TO BUSH: FIRE MICHAEL BROWN

By Michelle Malkin · September 04, 2005 08:17 AM During his visit to Mobile, Ala., on Friday, President Bush singled out Michael D. Brown, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, for praise:

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job."

Really? "Brownie's" job is to direct the federal response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Let's review his public statements during the past week:

- He admitted that he didn't act more aggressively because as late as last Sunday he expected Katrina to be a "standard hurricane" even though the National Weather Service in New Orleans was already predicting "human suffering incredible by modern standards."

- He proved himself utterly clueless about the disaster unfolding in New Orleans. He claimed that the federal relief effort was "going relatively well" and that the security situation in New Orleans was "pretty darn good."

- He blamed the flood victims in New Orleans for failing to evacuate on time, even though local authorities failed to make municipal vehicles available to residents who could not drive or did not own their own cars.

Nothing like having somebody in place to cover your tracks, eh?

And that big palette goes thud on a 1 year old, then shepherd smith and whorealdo go nuts, again and again.

It's not often that I agree with you, but...

I agree with you.

If only the presstitutes were as aggressive about uncovering DemonRAT incompetence as they were in Chicago in 1977,....

You could try something completely novel for a change. You could actually try to respond to the points being raised

There's a lot of comments in the last week which have been horrendously more troublesome and worth a column; I see these (which are taken out of context) as incredibly minimal...certainly not worth a firing.

Malkin, being a journalist, examines wordcraft under a mircroscope. She needs to give it a rest. She needs to see the larger picture of how the Feds have been reined in from exercising humanitarian relief, not attack the Feds themselves, especially for a few phrases.

"That last sentence is ludicrous on its face. How is help going to get there if the people delivering the help don't have the foggiest clue as to where it needs to go?"

The point was that lacking a plan, people would have been better off moved to safe dry land. Would it not be possible for a bus full of people to contact authorities and let them know where they are at? Most likely in that case, it would be a convoy of buses anyway, highly noticable to the authorities. Just because the Superdome is easy to locate doesn't make it a better alternative to evacuating at all. That has been proven.

And why is it that you cannot seem to grasp these words: FEMA cannot do ANYTHING until the LA authorities ASK them to; and they didn't.

And you can't seem to grasp this....the President flew down and kicked bureaucratic a@@ all over the Gulf coast and the rescue effort improved measurably in 24 hours.....

It's frustrating to see this whole thing go political like it has been.....

Bush and the Feds screwed up big time here, as did Nagin, Blanco and the whole last 40-years of the cradle to grave welfare system that helped create the mess in NOLA.

For those defending Bush, FEMA, Chertoff and the administration on this to the end, just ask yourself what your opinion of the Federal response would be, had say Jimmy Carter or Clinton been in charge and we had the exact same Monday-Thursday response from the Federal govt. You know darn well we would all be talking here about inneffectual "Jimmy" here and demanding impeachment hearings....

I wish the situation wouldn't be such where one side has to take 100% of the blame or the other here.....this was a complex mess of human tragedy and failure on many, many levels....

I'm just hoping that we as a Country don't spend $100 Billion to recreate the whole town in NOLA again as it was....that would be an even bigger tragedy IMO.

I guess I need a few more cups of coffee to come up to your brilliant standard of "Fire now, ask questions later".

Where did I "fire"? Just to review, you were the one insisting that it's inappropriate to criticize the administration at this time. I responded that it's not inappropriate, if indeed there is something to criticize it over.

I assume we both agreed that it's inappropriate to criticize it when there isn't anything to criticize it over, but it seems to be becoming quickly apparent that I shouldn't assume too much about certain people on this thread.

That's ridiculous.

The relief was already ON the way.

Like I said, you have no grasp of what it takes to get storm relief in place.

Listen to Lt. General Honore; he'll teach you, just like he's teaching the press today, what the truth is.

One thing you didn't mention was that Mayor Nagin spent (by all accounts) almost an hour and a half on Air Force One. What do you suppose they talked about? And what do you suppose might have been the result of that little chat? Yes, things started to improve, and according to most reports, cooperation between locals and feds improved.

It wasn't FEMA's communicatons; it was New Orleans.

What does the city of NO have to do with military search and rescue efforts?

Everything, including permission to go in and search (and rescue).

No offense, but I'd trust her clues more than yours.

Fairly typical of the rest of your posts; an assessment you've pulled out of thin air? Based on hearsay? Because she said so?

For one thing, she backed up her position with facts, which is more than I can say for you. We're getting close to 200 posts on this thread, and still not a single one of her detractors has yet to address any of the facts she laid down. It's quite telling.

She has no facts...yet, your bloviating notwithstanding. She has snipped some quotes from a few people under a lot of stress in an attempt to do what? Make a splash? To gain more face time on the teevee. Since her timing is incredible, I suspect her motives also.....FWIW.
