Sen. Mary Landrieu threatened the president of the United States with physical violence on Sunday, saying that if he or any other government official criticizes New Orleans police for failing to keep civil order in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - "I might likely have to punch him - literally."
"If one person criticizes [our sheriffs], or says one more thing, including the president of the United States, he will hear from me - one more word about it after this show airs and I - I might likely have to punch him - literally," Landrieu railed on "ABC's "This Week."
It is illegal to threaten the president with physical violence.
The Louisiana Democrat blasted Bush for neglecting the New Orleans levees, and demanded that he stop using the disaster for "photo-ops."
"The president came here yesterday for a photo-op," Landrieu charged, while surveying the disaster scene via helicopter with "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos in tow. "He got his photo-op but we are never going to get this fixed if he does not send us help now."
Landrieu also blamed Bush for cutting funding for levee improvement, before bursting into tears on camera.
In recent days, Louisiana officials have been criticized for bungling evacuation and rescue efforts. One of those officials, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, is Sen. Landrieu's brother.
Also, who made the decision to build a levee system that couldn't withstand a cat 4 storm? I've read estimates of about $1 billion to build one that could withstand a cat 5 storm. It WOULD have been cheap insurance, don't you think?
I agree. Bush may be a nice man, but the American government is an incompetent organization. HUD, IRS, etc., all of them are a complete mess. It doesn't matter who is president: Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr; it just gets worse and worse and nobody ever does anything to fix it.
Ummm Mary .. I don't recall the President ever criticizing the Sheriffs from NO
Oh please please tell me someone has a video link of this
Seems Ole Mary is about to snap ...
She they knows they are in trouble and the sounds like the claws have come out
Good, but my husband wonders since it was a contingency threat would she be guilty.
I mean she will only punch him out if he criticizes a sheriff.
As Chairman Mao might have said, "We are creating Communism with American characteristics."
Of course it's unfixable - it's socialism!
Even Americans can't make socialism work.
The people of LA are going to make all their elected representatives pay.
The President doesn't have an election. THEY do, and they've just lost some of their core constituents. Mary's family is drowning in the corruption and incompetance that led to this.
Blanco, Mary, Nagin and the others are going down. hell, some Reps might too for failing to rise to the occasion of leadership demanded.
He's been on Fox News several times.
I'd say that's a pretty good bet
"Republicans say that government doesn't work, then they get elected and prove it."
BUMP!
WWL did an interview with him and it appeared he was down there involved with trying to fix the levy breech.
He lost his home in NO. He has had a higher profile locally.
I'm not at all so sure of that. I think there are a lot of leftist women that do hate men. They would relish the chance to figuratively flip off the male establishment and would vote for any woman in a heartbeat - just because they could. It would be a real dilemma for them if 2008 were say Kerry vs. Rice to decide whether to vote for the leftie or the woman.
Among more conservative women, I think there are those who are more comfortable with a male in charge.
There are others who would vote depending upon which represented the lesser of the evils on the ballot. condi vs. any democrat or even some male 'centrist/RINOs' like McCain, Hagel, etc and I'll vote condi in a heartbeat. Do I think she's the most conservative or even the best nominee - not necessarily - I haven't made up my mind. I'm just using names as examples.
From the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS page of the Secret Service website:
http://www.secretservice.gov/faq.shtml#threat
How can I report a threat towards a protectee?
Contact your nearest USSS field office (listed in the "Emergency Numbers" section in the front of most phone books.
The Secret Service does not desire or solicit information pertaining to individuals or groups expressing legitimate criticism of, or political opposition to, the policies and decisions of the government of government officials. However, we are interested in legitimate information relating to threats, plans or attempts by individuals, groups or organizations to harm USSS protectees.
And I'm probably misunderestimating the percentage diverted.
By now it should be obvious that the corrupt and incomptent officials of Louisana and New Orleans are trying to deflect their culpability for this disaster. Blacks who are looting, raping, and murdering want a free pass for their behavior too.
Unlike New York we have seen a sizeable number of pure predators at work. The empty suits are blaming the wrong people for their actions.
Please explain to me when the voters of New Orleans were informed in 2000 that the Levees would not withstand a Category 4 Hurrican why there was no bond issue passed to finance the reenforcement or to install a Triple Levee system like the Dutch use? This is a campaign of misdirection to cover the butts of the New Orleans political Leadership.
We are also excusing behavior of entitlement that has festered due to Social programs that are absolute failures. When one forth of your population has lost the iniative to take charge of their lives you have another problem. Maybe this will in the long run be a blessing in disguise. As it will cause people to take charge of their lives and break the cycle of poverty in New Orleans.
We are also excusing the violent thug culture of New Orleans yet again by the empty suits in the media. I too want to see New Orleans restored. Lets do it right this time. Triple Levees build above Sea Level etc. It is horrible to see the deaths of the Old and the Young. There will be a lot of explaining to do. The bright note is this. Look at how our Military has preformed in this crisis. They are a credit to the Nation in a time of crisis.
I'd venture to say, your sisters at FR, both residents and US citizens, would whole heartedly agree with you.
Belated welcome to FR.
