Law Officers, Overwhelmed, Are Quitting the Force
NYtimes ^ | September 4, 2005 | JOSEPH B. TREASTER

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 3 - Reeling from the chaos of this overwhelmed city, at least 200 New Orleans police officers have walked away from their jobs and two have committed suicide, police officials said Saturday.

Some officers officially told their superiors they were leaving, police officials said. Others worked for a while and then stopped showing up. Still others, for reasons not always clear, never made it in after the storm.

The absences come during a period of extraordinary stress for the New Orleans Police Department. For nearly a week, many of its 1,500 members have had to work around the clock, trying to cope with flooding, an overwhelming crush of refugees, looters and occasional snipers.

P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police, said most of his officers were staying at their posts. But in an unusual note of sympathy for a top police official, he said it was understandable that many were frustrated. He said morale was "not very good" after nearly a week of deprivation and danger.

They did the same thing in New York right after 9/11. The Fire Department lost so many officers Rudy Guiliani held a promotion ceremony for the Fire Department a few blocks from my home in Downtown Brooklyn.

Different situation, and I doubt that the promotion ceremony was held on 9/11 itself, which would be the equivalent of holding one now in the N.O. area.

Sen. Mary Landrieu threatened the president of the United States with physical violence on Sunday, saying that if he or any other government official criticizes New Orleans police for failing to keep civil order in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - "I might likely have to punch him - literally."

Threatening physical violence against Repubs must be the latest RAT talking points. Clinton threatened to "assault" Denny Hastert for suggesting that N.O. should not be rebuilt.

I suppose the next thing you're going to tell me is that he didn't mean to send that Cat 4 hurricane into a poor Democratic city populated mostly be persons of color.

Hey - be fair: he did veer it to the east, at the last minute, to hit more white folks in MS & AL. He gets no points for that? :)

I believe "waterfront property" only applies to lots CONNECTED TO the mainland; whereas mostly everything there now (houses) can be considered "islands" (i.e. totally surrounded by water).

They're gonna have to institute a new 'island tax'.

That's only cause he took his eye of the screen because Dick Cheney was telling him how much money Haliburton was going to make out of it.

I don't see more than 20% of the city returning for at least ten years.

Once people relocate and recover they will move on with their lives. Their friends and relatives will live elsewhere. Their jobs will be elsewhere. Their children will be in school elsewhere.

Most of the residents of any future New Orleans will be new residents imho.

The place may become just a small gentrified tourist attraction and historical preservation mecca.

I just don't see the lowest lying areas being rebuilt--no government is that stupid, I hope.

Has a lot to do with the residency requirements. The democrats in NOLA didn't want to fight crime, they wanted black homeboy cops who would paticipate in and make excuses for crime and corruption.

Are the NOPD really police? Aren't they thugs with a badge?

A corrupt police dept. like that of New Orleans needs a good thinning of the herd. It's probably a good thing.

"Hey tourists! Why spend all that money to go to Itly and ride gondolas through sewage filled waters between the buildings?

Come to New Orleans, the "Venice of the Americas" and do it on-the-cheap!"

No currency conversions, (slightly) more "English-spoken-here", and we're further away from France!

Everyone here is missing the point.

My understnding is that some NO officers are on the take.

Many had their livlihoods destroyed --> the business they were shaking down, flooded, the drug dealers they are protecting will likely be arrested in the sweep, etc. What would you do?

Pull up stakes and move another state to live off a shake-down "padded" bank account, most likely.

Jack.

"Federal SWAT teams have been operating for several days and "taking out the trash". He says there is much going on behind the scenes that most people will never know about, but the house cleaning has been underway for several days and progress has been substantial. "

That just has to be the case. Even if Clinton wre in office, he would have done the same thing. The good side of this is the Feds will be forced to take control and clean up the mess. And much of the worse citizenry will be dispersed. Sort of like cleanup on aisle nine in Sodom and Gomorah.

Hey FC,
NO does not need rebuilding, maybe this was a cleansing of evil, even though good people suffered.

Why put money back into a cess pool when you have Pit Vipers running the La State and NO governments.

The people of Ms and Al were hit far harder, yet I do not see them running around like terrorists/crybabies and blaming President Bush.

Their Governor and the (NO) Mayor failed them with incompetence. They alsod failed to utilize the 250 millions set aside to strengthen the levees and dams to withstand Cat-5 hurricanes to include upgrading the water pumps?

I wonder how that 250 million was spent? Buying votes and under the table deals. Graft, corruption and political payoffs for these upstanding leaders?

Why were the hundreds of buses not used to evac, the alleged downtrodden? It all leads be to the same source, incompetent leadership in a critical crisis.

Maybe the IRS will look in to this matter and do something Good for the American Tax Payers.

The SWAT teams if being used, are doing what must be done. P.S. Kilintoon would have done nothing, except bite his diseased lip and pretend to feel their pain.

Possibly some good will become of this situation. Maybe some will get a fresh start in life and drop that government sugar tit and work like the rest of us.

All I can say is that the difference between the dedication of the police and firemen of NY that sacrificed over 350 lives to rescue lives during 9/11 and those of NO that quit, walked off or even participated in looting, leave a lot to be desired.

What is the line from "Demolition Man"?

"We are police officers we are not trained to deal with crime."

or words to that effect.
