Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan has canceled three visits to Colorado after emotions over her protest outside President Bush's ranch boiled over at a church and college campus. A Glenwood Springs church voted Thursday not to allow Sheehan to give a speech scheduled for later this month after some members threatened to leave the church if she came.
Church member Mo Barz said he thinks it is inappropriate for the church to host a political speaker.
"I was definitely against having her," he said. "I felt all along the church should rescind any agreement they had to have her be there."
Sheehan has gained notoriety for her month-long protest outside Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas and her demands to meet with him to discuss her 24-year-old son Casey's death in Iraq. Detractors have said she is demoralizing the troops and using her son's death to push a liberal platform.
The day after the church called off her visit there, Sheehan canceled other visits to the state, citing "more pressing needs elsewhere in the country," according to Karen Sjoberg, director of Grand Valley Peace and Justice, which had arranged for one of the visits.
Sheehan was scheduled to speak at Mesa State College in Grand Junction on Sept. 15. After the school received complaints that she would be appearing on campus, the school issued a statement saying it did not support or sponsor Sheehan's visit. Sheehan's camp then canceled the visit.
She also canceled a stop in Paonia.
A big thank you Jim for personally going to Texas to protest this nut.
Thanks. We had a great rally!
The real reason is the media isn't paying attention to her right now. They don't need her, they can smear President Bush without here.
CS was a dog day story and the dog days are over.
And my son in the Navy thanks you too!
A month in Texas in Aug. can do that to you, don't ya know.
I was just trying to figure out how much trouble I would be in if I donated some eggs to her. Overhand.
I work week ends otherwise it would be a date....you savage.
Now, help me out here: just a guess, please, but how many of these things do you think she's had to "cancel?"
