Oregon Welcomes Hurricane Katrina Refugees

Salem, Oregon - Last night Governor Kulongoski received a request from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help provide temporary housing for victims of hurricane Katrina who currently are without food, water and shelter.

Under the Governor's direction, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OEM) immediately began coordinating with the Oregon Red Cross to accommodate approximately 1,000 refugees from Gulf Coast states. The refugees are expected to arrive in the Portland area sometime in the next 24 to 48 hours.

"In the days since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Oregonians from every corner of the state have reached out wanting to help," Governor Ted Kulongoski said. "Our offer has been accepted and now it's our time to pull together to help those victims who lost their homes and their communities find some solace so they can regain their strength and begin healing from the tragedy that they - and our nation - have endured."

Many details remain under development and OEM will continue to work through the night in conjunction with FEMA and the Oregon Red Cross to secure lodging and identify the supplies needed to meet the victims' basic needs. In the coming hours and days, as the needs of these individuals becomes more clear, the Oregon Red Cross will provide information about how the citizens of Oregon can best provide assistance.

Until more information is available, the best way Oregonians can offer assistance is through financial support.

"Every Oregonian sends their thoughts and prayers to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The devastation in that region is unparalleled. I want to tell the victims that our hearts are with them today and every day until their lives and their communities are rebuilt.

"I ask my fellow Oregonians to join the relief effort. I'm sending a contribution to the Red Cross. Please direct your donations to your local Red Cross, Mercy Corps, Northwest Medical Teams or other organizations that provide disaster relief.

"After speaking with the Governors in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, I can tell you that at this time, while the rescue and recovery mission is operating, financial contributions help enormously in supporting volunteers and providing medical assistance and other services.

"I also pledged Oregon's help in the long-term. And it will be a very long recovery effort. Oregonians are generous, and we historically step up when our neighbors have suffered some disaster. I ask that every Oregon business compile a list of resources that we can provide to our friends in the demolished region so that we are ready when the rebuilding efforts begin.

"The hurricane survivors need everything we can offer because they lost everything they had. Thank you."

Looks like Sleepy Ted is awake.

Hey, Ted! Thanks for acting so quickly to help those folks.

Now tell me why you refused to move the legislation through the Oregon House that would've punished child sex abusers???!!! Couldn't wake you out of your coma for that one, now could we.

Ted Kulongoski, you suck.

They'll fit right in in Oregon, the ultra-Liberal deadbeat welfare state. A match made in Heaven.

Why Oregon, a state that is barely Democrat in PoTUS elections. Send them to California or Vermont. It be a shame if the refuse from NO shifted too close to call states to comfortbable blue states in time for Hillary in '08.

Where are our left-voting bloc socialist guests staying while in Portland? I'd take their dogs (no pit bulls though) before taking them. I'm not trying to diminish what they have been through, but I'm tired of taking care of able-bodied, working-age people who, for generations don't work and sleep in while I'm on the road driving to work every morning to support them.
