WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, today announced that Federal resources are being allocated to support emergency protective response efforts response efforts in the parishes located in the path of Hurricane Katrina.
Brown said President Bush authorized the aid under an emergency disaster declaration issued following a review of FEMA's analysis of the state's request for federal assistance. FEMA will mobilize equipment and resources necessary to protect public health and safety by assisting law enforcement with evacuations, establishing shelters, supporting emergency medical needs, meeting immediate lifesaving and life-sustaining human needs and protecting property, in addition to other emergency protective measures.
The parishes of Allen, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Caldwell, Claiborne, Catahoula, Concordia, De Soto, East Baton Rouge, East Carroll, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Franklin, Grant, Jackson, LaSalle, Lincoln, Livingston, Madison, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Pointe Coupee, Ouachita, Rapides, Red River, Richland, Sabine, St. Helena, St. Landry, Tensas, Union, Vernon, Webster, West Carroll, West Feliciana, and Winn were designated eligible for assistance. In addition, federal funds will be available for public safety debris removal and emergency protective measures at 75 percent of approved costs.
Brown named William Lokey of FEMA to coordinate the federal relief effort. FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
Doesn't matter-- Bush doesn't care about blacks, and it's all his fault. /sarc
Oh yea I forgot that - oops my fault! (/sarcasm)
Good catch a51. But I'm afraid the media are more interested in the conflict rather than the truth.

But I'm afraid the truth does not matter to the venomous Bush hating MSM.
Bush declares emergency in Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.
Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.
The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.
Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.
"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.
I don't blame Bush but because I'm living in a hurricane area and there's the threat of terrorism, Michael Chertoff does not make me feel very safe. Neither does Mike Brown. I want some manly men in charge, or manly women for that matter.
The Rats are insinuating that they might hold hearings on the Katrina response, to that I say "Bring It On!!" At least we can respond to the one-sided MSM portrayal.
(beware, liberal type conspiracy theory)
Seems to me that the mayor of New Orleans and LA Gov didn't want to spend the extra cash given to the city by the president even prior to the hurricane.
Then they could so called pocket the money in the state/city patronage pot. Too bad the 'cane was worse than they hoped and they got burned (Kinda like something our beloved mayor in Chicago might do).
Major Nagin's fleet of buses, go nowhere.
He also doesn't care about black people, so it must have been Maxine Waters or Charlie Rangel who gave the order.
Note how the "hot potato" is immediately passed. By the time this got down the chain of flunkies, it probably wound up on somebody's voicemail.
bump!
Brown named William Lokey of FEMA to coordinate the federal relief effort.
Lokey encouraged those who sustained losses in the designated counties to begin the disaster application process by registering online at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will be available 24 hours seven days a week until further notice.
Registering on-line is encouraged due to the possibility of high call volume. If registering by phone, owners of commercial properties and residents with only minor losses are urged to wait a few days before calling so those whose homes were destroyed or heavily damaged can be served first. Storm victims with insurance coverage should contact their insurance company or agent before calling to report losses and, if necessary, to request an advance or partial payment of their settlement.
Yeah, that's the ticket. Get people to register for that government check!
Chertoff impresses me as very smart especially in his currency with smart, sophisticated approaches to problems. We have previously had a lot of expensive low tech solutions that I found frustrating.
The mayor and governor could have more. The MSM curiously overlooks this...
Actually, Lokey does have a credible resume. But he has multiple layers of boobs above him.
