We also need to publicize the fact that the Clinton admin. nixed the levi upgrade that would have protected the city from a level 4 or 5 hurricane.

Well if the Convention Center and the Superdome had always been designated as "disaster shelters" then they should have been equipped with provisions for such an emergency. Nothing to "deliver" to the shelter. Keep them ON SITE.

This is a failure on the local scale.

Bricks? What? No need for such drama.

If it was logistically possible for the the Feds to have swooped in with 40 thousand troops on Tues, during a flood, and a hurricane moving north, they would have.

It was possible for the State to evac its citizens, before the cat 5 storm, with the days of notice they had, other states do it all the time.

This enormous storm destroyed 3 states, it was catastrophic, and America is not somehow immune from tragedies, nor can America expect a perfect solution in a 1/2 sitcom timeline. And we should stop these myths.

What is possible is to encourage factual thinking, which the left and its media are not capable of, ie, the day of the storm, it was Bush' fault because of global warming, then he was somehow ignoring the storm, sitting back and sunbathing, playing the guitar, golfing, and now it has been reduced to slander such as he hates black people.

Preach to your side about logical fallacies.

They could care less about any suffering of people, and that is a fact born out by their behaviors, their leaders, their policies, and their ideology.

They let poor people suffer every day in cities that they lead, and then blame others when a tragedy occurs.

More and more it is seeming that the 'problem' was with the governor's office. FEDs needed the governor's OK because the governor is the state executive. Locals needed the governor's OK because much of the assistance has to come/be initiated by the state executive.

Blanco should be recalled asap.

No levee can hold. Any earth levee will only buy you time. When the water table is signivicantly higher on one side than on the other, the water will immediately begin seeping through the ground to the lower side. It is only a matter of time before there is a blowout and the water will start gushing, then eroding a larger hole, then the whole thing collapses. The only way to hold back the water is a perfectly impermeable barrier that goes all the way down to bedrock. Even that may not work for long depending on how porous the bedrock is and how well anchored the barrier is to the bedrock. And you and I as tax payers would never agree to such an expense.

Their linking The New Orleans flood to Iraq (witness Lord Ho Ho, Michael Moore's, "letter" about the National Guard stationed in Iraq) shows the poltiical points they are trying to sway with the sheeple. Cindy Sheehan eventually left no doubt that she was a barking moonbat long before her son was killed in action. The same as Nick Berg's dad. This storm comes at a good time, to sweep that embarassing fiasco fron the front pages.

Perhaps he should be looking at Bill Clinton's military cutbacks which deploys more of the reserves and National Guard.

And speaking of Cindy's Crawford tent village which could feed thousands. Why haven't they set up a relief camp for the evacuees? They are still trailing Cindy around on her cross country trek to DC.

" After the emergency was declared by the President on Saturday, what actions did he take? He KNEW the levees would not hold. What assets were sent to the city on Sunday to help save the city? "

In general I agree with some of your comments but it was unusual for a President to declare an Emergency before it actually happened, after he did so FEMA was free to move assets and setup formal communications with the locals. However, it is the responsibility of the Governor of the effected state(s) and his/her ER team to request and direct assistance from FEMA. It was the Governor and the Bozo Mayor that has direct C&C. That's the way the Laws are written and how the system is designed

It's been well known for decades that the levee system around NOLA had real issues. That wasn't a Corps issue, that became a political issue long before Bush took office. We (the taxpayers) have given billions of federal tax dollars to State & Local governments to devise plans and purchase equipment to deal with these ER planning issues. The question is what did LA and NO do with all of the money they were given

You may have problems with how the system is design to work but at least make an attempt to understand how it was setup to work. If the news media even made an attempted to understand, they might start asking the right questions.

You are the one complaining about the job that the "president" did/is doing.

That accomplishes NOTHING to aid the people still in the water.

Whine all you want.

Yes saved the city. For whatever reason, the levee broke after the storm. At this critical time, who was inspecting the levees? Why were repairs stopped at night? Why weren't all available resources thrown at the broken levee?

Bush declares emergency in Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.

Ed. comment: Thought I'd accentuate an already good post...

Also keep in mind that lots of blacks ignored the evacuation order. It's that mentality some blacks have in NO - "I ain't going nowhere the gov't will come anyway...."

And then they blame the government once they do arrive.

I understand how the system is designed to work. I think the Governor and Mayor should go to jail (I know that won't happen). Clearly President Bush PROPERLY leaned into the crisis. The system did not respond properly.

As a West Pointer, I've got to disagree with you about the Corps. I am 100% sure the District Commander has all the studies and reports that shows every weakness in the system and it's faults. I am also sure that was properly submitted to all needed parties. BUT by law, the Corps is responsible for the waterways and it's Commanders are responsible for everyone and everything his command does OR FAILS to do. A levee failed. A city was destroyed. Thousands died. That Commander HAS to answer for all his actions and inactions from the time the President declared an emergency to the present.

Actually, I think their plan had two parts:
  1. Hope the hurricane doesn't hit them
  2. Blame Bush if it does
Beyond that, I think there's a lack of quantitative appreciation of disasters. Basically, they figure that if a storm is going to hit, they're doomed, and have no appreciation for the difference between a disaster that claims 100 lives and one that claims 100,000. Instead, they simply see it as being "doomed either way".

I am concerned about 2 things

1) That thousands of our fellow citizens were in danger of death and the only thing conservatives seem to give a damn about is the president. There is no care or concern shown for their plight.. "let them eat cake" .

2) I am concerned about the job OUR GOVERNMENT did.
This is the same group of keystone cops that will have to respond when a terrorists nuke goes off a few miles from your house , or the terrorists bomb the dam that saves your city from flooding .
The world now knows we are a country without a plan or a clue .

If this did not leave you very afraid you are very short sighted .

If this tragedy did not touch your heart so deeply that other people's political objectives pale in the face of it , then sir you are a heartless conservative that mocks the conservative's so called pro life position. The living need to be found and helped, to hell with the political future of anyone until they are all safe

It is terrible that US Bush supporters actually have to join in on the blame game, but the Bush bashers started a ghoulish and pathetic attack. It is our responsibility and not the administration to get our hands dirty.

I saw a movie years ago called "Red Dawn". It starred Patrick Swayze (pre "Ghost" and "Dirty Dancing"), Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, and others. It dealt with a Russian invasion on American soil, and a determined effort by American teenagers (including the aforementioned) to stop them. Of course, there were reprisals against American citizens, but every time the Germans and Russians attacked, the effort of the good guys to defeat them intensified.

Well, in the course of the movie, when the Russians were taking losses, one of the Russian commanders made a speech that laid out a strategery that I think has parallels for us:

"You can only win a war by exterminating the enemy. Do you know what we are fighting? We are fighting Wolverines...small, ferocious animals. For them, you need a hunter. And you know, I am a hunter.

"From this moment on, there will be no further reprisals against citizens. This was stupid. Impotence. Comrades, if a fox stole your chickens, would you slaughter your pig because he saw the fox? No. You would hunt the fox, find where it lives and destroy it! And how do we do this?

"Become a fox."
