The group that grabbed a school bus on their own and were the first group to the Astrodome managed to make it just fine to Houston without bathrooms on their school bus. They stopped three times and pooled their own money for gas money.

That mayor and governor both need to resign in shame. They need to apologize to those poor people they abandoned.

Unfortunately poor blacks have and will continue to elect corrupt and incompetent leaders and suffer because of it.

Shysters similar to Sharpton and Jesse Jackson operate on the mushroom theory. Keep them in the dark, and feed them lots of horse manure.

That's a good question. One I had, also. And, I keep hearing the Corps of Engineer's being blamed for the levees, but I just heard Jim Rogers [a New Orleans resident at one time] say on Fox that the Board of Levees in New Orleans have used their funds to purchase a casino, purchase some kind of Marina, boats, and condos.

Thank you for your response. I just get a little tired of the PC about this entire situation. Of course things could have been done better by FEMA, But the failure of the state and local officials in LA borders on criminal negligence.

This is where leadership comes in. Somebody in the mayor's office probably whined that people would need a bathroom and he caved and didn't move the people out.

This is why it's so important to have people around you who will push you to do what's right - not what's PC.

And .. the mayor's worse action was allowing visitors who had been staying in a hotel to be moved out of town sooner than those who were housed at the Superdome.

CNN has been very shrill in calling for more aid in NOLA. My recollection from previous threads here is that CNN has resolutely refused to get involved, especially in attempting to help Americans. CNN's reporters have refused to be debriefed following receipt of information that might be helpful to US forces. I don't get it.

The "spin" from the left will be that, if GWB really had wanted mandatory evacuations, he could have done that himself . . .

"Federal Attitude: "It's the weekend and I'll start working on after my coffee on Monday"...."

You know that's just plain dumb. I live in SC and I know at least three federal workers that were ordered to and in position on the gulf coast by Sunday as part of FEMA's and HLS plans. They have families here that were and are worried sick about them.

I am no big fan of the federal government. But your statement is just stupid. Considering the size of this double disaster I'm surprised they could act as fast as they did. The folks that screw up big time here is NO and LA leadership.

Agreed - as someone asked above:

"Do you realize how unprecedented it is to have a president not only issue a disaster area proclamation before the disaster hits, but a president having to call a governor to get her to act in the face of danger? It's insane that a governor completely shirks her duties and leaves it up to the federal government to come in to take care of her problems. There are responsibilities the state has. It's why it's called a state. If governors defer all responsibility to the federal government, what's the point of having states at all?

The fact that today people are being helped, that people are being airlifted out, that control is being exerted is proof that the federal level did not fail. It was just that period of time before the federal level could get assembled and on the scene.

That mayor and governor both need to resign in shame. They need to apologize to those poor people they abandoned."

I would like to have all City , State, and Federal agencies locked up in that dome with the feces and afloat in urine, until those caught up in the mess will say that they can go.

Why would not any fool have a staff on hand to keep that dome clean and in order? Why oh Why? Why did not anyone bring in potty chairs or toilets of some kind? who can ever forget this? Who can forgive this?

According to this report, Bush called and requested the mandatory evacuation.

He didn't order it because, as president, his authority is limited here. But he certainly tried to light a fire under that useless governor.

Let's not create the impression that it was somehow Bush's job to order evacuations. It's never been the president's job to do that (except in a situation where all the local officials are dead because of nuclear attack where FEMA would intervene).

"NWS to NO: "Cat 5 storm coming, it will destroy everything .... Good Luck"...."

NWS to 'small town USA' NWS has issued a tornado warning for ____, take cover immediately in ...

I think most Americans understand what to do when NWS issues a warning. It means unequivocally that life threatening danger is imminent.
Most neighborhoods have storm warning sirens that sound and police cars with sirens to get peoples attention and PA systems on the cars to issue instructions. They are told to do so by dispatch and its leaders.

Stupid is as stupid does.

There's a thread with a better pic that has a lot more buses but I can't find it. They could have used all the school buses to get people out of the city ahead of the storm...

Nagin, Blanco, what was your plan?
