NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin declared a state of emergency on Sunday and ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city as Hurricane Katrina churned toward the city with maximum sustained winds of nearly 175 mph.
All of Orleans Parish falls under the order except for necessary personnel in government, emergency and some other public service categories.
People who are unable to evacuate were told to immediately report to a designated shelter.
"I wish I had better news for you, but we are facing a storm that most of us have feared," Nagin said. "I do not want to create panic, but I do want the citizens to understand that this is very serious and it's of the highest nature."

Long before the Superdome, . Where the Saints of football play, . There's a city where the damned call home, . Hear their hellish rondelet: . . New Orleans! . Home of pirates, drunks, and whores... . New Orleans! . Tacky, overpriced souvenir stores... . . If you want to go to hell, you should take a trip . To the Sodom and Gomorrah of the Mississip': . . New Orleans! . Stinking, rotten, vomiting, vile... . New Orleans! . Putrid, brackish, maggotty, foul... . . New Orleans! . Crummy, lousy, rancid and rank... . New Orleans!
That quote doesn't exactly state Blanco wasn't going to order the evacuation, but it's great President Bush made sure she would.

This is a CNN coverup with help from the dems and the msm who can't bear the thought of having to take responsibility for the democratic non -leadership that went into this disaster by the democratic gov. and NO mayor.
I was watching the Gov.'s press conference last Sunday morning and heard her say that mand. evac. was going into effect at the President's urging in a phone call to her that morning.
I mentioned this to a DU-type co-worker on Tuesday when he blasted me with "Global Warming" being at fault. His response was that the mayor ordered the mandatory evac. on Saturday.
Deny, deny, deny -- lie, lie, lie.
Bunch of socialist crooks.
Just think how much of the history of the 20th century was shaped by the media.
They're still trying to pull a fast one on us, but it doesn't work anymore. Taking them a while to realize it too.
