Hastert Tries Damage Control After Remarks Hit a Nerve (Clinton says he would have attacked him)

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert began his day yesterday explaining that he really does not want to see New Orleans bulldozed, and he ended it defending his absence from the Capitol when Congress approved a $10.5 billion hurricane aid package. In between, a former president hinted he would like to throttle the Illinois Republican.

Hastert was still reeling from reaction to his comments earlier this week about the storm-ravaged city. "It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," he said in an interview with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill. Asked whether it made sense to spend billions of dollars rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he told the paper, "I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me."

In Syracuse, N.Y., former president Bill Clinton was discussing New Orleans's dilemma when someone described the speaker's comments. Had they been in the same place when the remarks were made, Clinton said, "I'm afraid I would have assaulted him."

After all, he IS good at assault.

As long as his victim is a woman. Bill Clinton is far too craven a physical coward to actually pick a fight with a man.

And then Denny could tell Bill to "put some ice on it."

I guess what Hastert said isn't PC, but... c'mon... why re-build a city below sea level?

Or, don't bulldoze it; just use it as landfill to raise it to a higher elevation -- then rebuild the city on top.

I was talking to my mother yesterday and she said "What a stupid place for a city." Then I reminded her "Mom, the French did it."

Once again.

Agree or disagree with his point. But we shouldn't deem topics off-limits to discussion.

People who do that usually don't have a good argument for their side.

So, when Hastert says we should consider bulldozing New Orleans, it is up to people who want to spend 20 billion rebuilding New Orleans to explain why they want to do so, given that the next hurricane could simply destroy it again.

And if they want to spend 50 billion to make it hurricane-proof, they should explain why we should spend an extra 30 billion protecting one city, when the same 30 billion could make get the entire rest of the effected area rebuilt with hurricane-proof buildings.

Give us a good reason to spend all that money to keep water out of the city.

It made sense before, when we were protecting a viable city which was sinking.

But now that it is a lake, explain why we would want to convert a lake into a city.

Are there any other lakes we should do this with? Maybe we could build in lake michigan?

BTW, I'm not arguing one way or another. I'm saying that any stupid democrat politician that yells about Hastert makign this suggestion simply don't understand what their job is. And I am just sick of people who rather than holding up their side of the debate, instead demonize their opponents and rule the topics off-limits.

Islam is a terrorist organization. Day Labor Centers reward illegal immigrants. Looters should be shot. New Orleans should be bulldozed.

These are all topics for discussion, not chances to demonize people.

Actually, I think Hastert raises a good point. We should at least consider whether the city should be rebuilt in a different location.

Well Bill and the LA Gov had better get used to the idea, there is no way in heck that NO is going to be rebui;t where it is now. The country will go berserk, hell there are 2 other states that will be rebuilt for less money than that one city if idiots try to bring it back to where it is now.

That's the one thing about this whole disaster I find LOL funny.

His timing was certainly atrocious but... should billions and billions be spent rebuilding this geographical insanity that is modern NO? A city below sea level with a lake on the north, the mightiest river in North America on the west and south, and the Gulf of Mexico a stone's throw away?

Hastert would have danced rings around the bum. With a bad ticker all he would have been able to do is have one of his kneepadders in the press to wheel him down to the local choke & puke for a cheeseburger.

When DUmocrats are in charge of any situation, people die due to their ineptitude to handle any challenge beyond a DUmocrat fundraiser.

Hastert was a wrestling expert in college and taught Greco-Roman wrestling in high school. Mr. Heartpatient would do well to steer clear of the speaker.

Well, we shouldn't rebuild below sea level, without some amazingly engineered flood control. But it might have been more prudent to REFRAIN FROM SAYING SO when there are hundreds of dead bodies still lying (or floating) in the streets.

What is wrong with some of these supposed "conservative" politicians? You can't get them to say a word about an obvious wrong when you need their support; but then they open their stupid yaps when least expected and make us look like a bunch of fools.

Of course, slimy Clinton jumps in to take advantage....he always does.

"Listen, lad. I've built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. The king said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same -- just to show 'em! It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one! That sank into the swamp. So I built a third one! That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one...stayed up!"
