President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I don't think anyone will particularly care, at least not for a while. Maybe later, when everyone is safe, the ground crews will curse them for creating the work, but they *know* what's more important.

I just saw what I've heard called a duck.

Call Bill Clinton. Those are all over Hot Springs, AR. I think the people who own them are "friends" of his. They even took some to D.C. when Clinton (& Hillary!) became President.

May 1, 1999

LAKE HAMILTON, Arkansas (CNN) -- An amphibious tourist boat sank Saturday after taking on water, killing 11 people as passengers frantically searched for life preservers, authorities said.

The World War II-era craft -- called a "duck" because of its use on land and water -- picked up passengers in Hot Springs and had just begun a scenic tour of Lake Hamilton.

"The (boat) operator told us that all of a sudden the front started coming up, almost vertical. It started taking on water and submerged in about 30 seconds," said Garland County Sheriff Larry Selig.

Eleven of the 20 people on board drowned, including three small children. A cloth canopy may have trapped the victims as the boat sank in 50-foot deep waters, said Hot Springs Mayor Bob Mathis.

CNN has been unwatchable for 3 days now. to listen to them, they are still covering the story as if it were Wednesday and Thursday - like no progress has been made since then. everything is not perfect to be fair, but CNN is trying to hold their audience to the idea that nothing has been done.

Celine Dion was a madwoman last night on LKL.

see upthread. earlier today, a woman calls into FNC and describes her condition. it was unreal, she wasn't even trying to exit her house to wave at helicopters or boat teams. its was as if she didn't want to, or didn't know to, evacuate her house. she gave her address, and Geraldo moved in.

Your story is wonderful -- this is the kind of reporting we won't get anywhere else, the first-person stuff!

This is precisely why I kept saying earlier that, rather than making a donation to one of the large charities, I believed that it would be much better to get a small-denomination Wal-Mart gift card into the hands of these people. Cheaper to drop in the mail than a carton, too.

Each person's needs are different, something to make them feel whole again. A baby needs diapers, a mother needs feminine hygiene products, a grandparent needs medicine...and the intriguing lady you mentioned needed some press-on nails!

Keep us posted on your activities at the shelter!

everyone knew exactly why Witt was brought into this. he's the DNC and Clinton representative for this event.

the more I see of this, the more I believe my tin-foil assertion from days ago that Blanco did this on purpose - she went slow on maintaining civil order to make FEMA's job harder, so the DNC could blame Bush for everything afterwards.

Celine Dion on Larry King Live Saturday, Sept. 3.

"How come it's so easy to send planes in another country, to kill everyone in a second, to destroy lives," at a time when Americans need to serve their own country, she said. "We need to serve our country, and be there right now to rescue the rest of the people. We need the cash, we need the blood, we need the support, right now we need the prayers."

Dion, speaking from Las Vegas, said she's been finding it devastating. "I'm not thinking with my head, I'm talking with my heart," she said.

The reporter from Dallas says this hurricane was like being in an F4 tornado for hours.

Says people have really turned to God for solace.

That is a wonderful story....thank you for sharing!!!

My husband had a very good friend from work that lives in Forney.

A small town is perfect for helping these people out...for some reason, small towns do "helping" very well!!!
