President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I keep hearing all these long lead times before New Orleans is back on line.

Actually they don't have to have all the city totally pumped out before bringing water and sewage back on line.

They probably won't let some come back because their houses were totally destroyed.

Hopefully some won't come back.

My son is a small housing contractor and is telling me that there's going to be a lot of work for everyone willing to work, and soon.

Wouldn't be surprised that a lot of welfare poor end up with reparation like settlements from the government before this is over.

IMHO

What is the source of that? I received two GOP emails to donate to the Red Cross. There was another thing with a pin, but I am not sending the GOP any money anyway.

Some of the people that are being helped may have been homeless before this happened...and they are much better off!

Gov. Perry has announced a new program.

In order that Louisiana not lose valuable populations, we are beginning an exchange program. We'll send one liberal from Houston, San Antonio, or Austin for every refugee we get. This way, the populations remain constant.

Oh, my. It looks like our first shipment tried to "pet the big lizards" and got eaten by alligators. Oh well. We've got plenty more!

Oh, Lord. If this hurricane had to hit, WHY did it have to be one of our most crooked democratic states; this is what they have been praying for to put the screws to the President.

I'm starting to get physically ill. My intuition tells me this is going to get really nasty.... not from the poor people who were evacuated. From politics.

I accidentally clicked on the Free Dominion web instead of FR. Some here wanted to document the events. I didn't read through much that's on this, but, if anyone's looking for a day-by-day lead up to Katrina, this may be a resource (credits FR):

Remainder of the paragraph--

Some officials in the state suspected a political motive behind the request. "Quite frankly, if they'd been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals," said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly.

They were so worried about their own keisters, the Governette and the Babbling, Cussing Mayor added their contribution to the greatest natural disaster this country has seen.

The link PROMULGATION OF EMERGENCY ORDERS on the New Orleans home page gives promulgates the mandatory evacuation order (No time or date is given; I wonder why). Notice that the mayor exempted essential personnel of operating hotels and their patrons. So he did legally protect the city against lawsuits by hotel operators. But what about those essential personnel, probably all residents of NO?

Some of my liberal friends are all mad at me and want no more emails... I kept sending them blurbs with the truth. They cannot TAKE the truth. One is Canadian and basically believes what the Canadian Networks are telling them about the President.... ~LOL~ I can't take it any more. Too much stupidity makes me crazy, thank God for Free Republic!

Evacuees forced to wait outside bus station

By Allen Powell II River Parishes bureau

Several dozen New Orleans residents seeking transportation out of Baton Rouge Saturday were denied entrance to the Greyhound bus station on Florida Street. Instead, the would-be travelers say they were forced to wait outside on the sidewalk for hours.

The travelers, many of them recent evacuees from New Orleans, waited for the chance to buy tickets to Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and northern Louisiana. Several of them said they had been waiting at the station since the early afternoon and by 7 p.m. hadn’t been allowed to wait inside, use bathroom facilities or get water. Many of the travelers said they only wanted to purchase tickets or pick-up tickets that had already been purchased by family members.

Terrance Pierre, who said he was evacuated from Xavier University on Wednesday, said he had been waiting outside of the station for more than five hours to purchase a ticket to Texas. Pierre said he was just trying to reunite with his family and friends.

“I’m just trying to get a ticket with my own money,” he said.

Through security guards at the station, the bus station’s manager declined to discuss why the people were not allowed inside.

Travelers said they were told that there had been a disturbance at the bus station on Friday, but that could not confirmed with station employees. In addition, they said they were told that the bus station’s booking system was not operating.

Officials from Greyhound’s national office could not be reached for comment on Saturday night.

Although the crowd appeared orderly, six Baton Rouge police cruisers arrived at the station at about 7:20 p.m... A security guard at the door told officers that some people in the crowd had been banging on the station’s doors, a claim all of the travelers vehemently denied. No one was arrested, and the officers left after instructing travelers to line up along the front of the building. After the officers left, bus station employees began allowing some people to enter the station to use the restroom, but most were forced to remain outside.

Al Gore was spotted today visiting hurricane victims, but wouldn't give an interview.

I'm sure he's telling the victims how inept the Bush administration has been and how angry they should be.

I heard some talk about medivacing a soldier who had some type of infection in his arm maybe starting with a spider bite. His arm was swollen to 3X the size of the other. They initially were sending out a medic, then the guy trying to evac the soldier said no...he'd already been seen by a ?PA and he didn't need a medic to come to him...he needed to be taken to a hospital. Thats the last I heard of that conversation.
