President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Don't even joke about that... unless Leo DiCaprio gets to fall off the ship at the end again.

I'm dying to know what the female lieutenant's "mission" for someone on the third floor is.

Probably putting her purse away after she left it out.

One of the few times I might agree with Simmons.
The South never fell. The currency became worthless, yet the spirit lives on. Witness the great state of Texas.

You know, all of these news reporters keep repeating the cliche..."times like this bring out the best in people and the worst in people"?

When they have been saying it, they are referring to the looters and murderers and rapists in NO....

BUT, I think it pertains MORE, in this case, to the entertainers, the politicians and the pseudo-politicians like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and all.

THEY are the worst of this disaster...the thieves, murderers, rapists..they would have doing their "thing" even if there wasn't a hurricane.

These other people are the ones taking advantage...and showing their "worst" side...IMHO, of course.

Nice post.

Very true that the MSM always seems to overdue every disaster.

I seem to remember in Florida that many areas did not get relief for several days and weeks.

I honestly think that Paglia in her column on the drudge web site is fairly accurate.

Right now the left wing race baiter's and their white liberal enablers are having a field day.

Why, because were still in the emotional stage of seeing reporters cry and humans suffer.

However, Bush has been bashed horrifically before on a number of disasters.

After the bleeding hearts run out of things to say and the emotion subsides then people will see the enormity of what Bush and our brave government personnel accomplished.

They will see this not in a negative way but as a cheap PR ambush.

The price is yet to be paid for the lefts folly.

Don't give me that PC stuff. People like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and several local NAACP types see themselves as black first and American second. If we are going to handcuff ourselves in the debate just to be nice, then they will be free to say whatever they want whether it is true or not.
