Katrina Live Thread, Part XIV

President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"Governor Blanco "commandeered" school buses on Friday

Really? Is that why we saw so many underwater?? What did she do with the ones in NO that she "commandeered"?
Sorry, I'm a woman and I support women that work hard to get ahead, but this woman appears to be to be useless. I fell badly saying that about a fellow human being and I understand it was an overwhelming situation, but it appears that she and Nagin were/are in way over their heads.

I was at the store yesterday, thought I'd pick up one (more) gas can - there were only 3 left. I turned away from my cart for a mere 30 seconds.. and that can was lifted right out of my cart. Went and checked, the other two which had been on the aisle were gone too. It was done by skilled hands moving very quietly and fast.

I already have cans. I thought to buy an extra for a neighbor who couldn't find any at any of the stores.

I saw him playing with some kids in Baton Rouge...on Fox.

I didn't hear that, though.

Dang...and I was just saying to my daughter that I wish more celebrities would be like him and actually go visit with the people instead of getting on TV and saying give, give, give.

Oh, Mr. Harvey? Never mind!!!!!

I'm slowing rolling through this thread and just got to your post concerning the backlash against the MSM. About 6 lines into it, I started thinking "now this is a well thought out, coherent post." And it matches exactly what I've been seeing. We've been down this road before. The only group the public hates more then lawyers are reporters. People understand this is a national disaster. They see the work of the National Guard, the Coast Guard and other rescuers in New Orleans. They watch as their communities absorb refugees and sponser donation drives. And all they hear from the media is how blacks are being purposely neglected, that George Bush bears all the blame for the nightmare in New Orleans, and that the looters, shooters, rapists and murderers in New Orleans deserve our sympathy, not our scorn. And the average American says..."You know what, we're all doing the best we can. We're all trying to help the hurricane victims. And you know what our efforts are producing? A bunch of finger pointing from camera hogging media personalities, the usual race baiters claiming blacks have been targeted for destruction, and the same voices as always blaming Bush. Well screw 'em all. I'm going fishing."

The American people proved in 2000 and 2004 that no matter how hard the media tries, it can not fool all the people all of the time. In fact, with each day it fools fewer people fewer times. And every time the media overplays its hand like it is doing by blaming Bush for every piece of trash littering the streets of New Orleans, it just hammers another nail in its coffin.

Hannity did not challenge him. Sharpton says "hurricane relief is better in Florida". yes, because Jeb Bush isn't a zombie.

It was just a dumb thing to say. He was saying how school buses are built for kids and uncomfortable for adults. Should have shut up while he was ahead.

FNC trying to do a non-political presentation. I can live with that, but why then bring Sharpton on?

We bought a hybrid Toyota Prius a few years ago. (Not because we are enviro-whackos, but because my hubby is a techno geek and fell in love with the Prius.)

Anyway, I'm really glad we have it right now. We also have a mini-van, and it is really expensive to run.

That is good news...

Then maybe the Bush bashing will just be confined to the politicians and loud mouths that would bash him for finding the cure for Cancer!!!

Personally, I wish the race-baiting would get some backlash..if it keeps up, there could be some trouble.

"I wonder how the guy had the energy to rape anyone. Those people had been there 6 days (Geraldo's count, not mine) and had been w/o food and water the entire time."

My thoughts exactly.

"I don't understand it either. I guess we're supposed to just keep flying tired".

I also heard one of the guys complaining about a "bad decision" on buses at the Super Dome. Something about keeping them there until Monday.

I guess school buses must fall under the same catagory as calling the victims "refugees".

Before the hurricane it was suggested to the Mayor that he use school buses for evacuation and he balked and said no...he wanted Greyhound Buses...

ffffffffffttttt!

Al Sharpton making this a race issue.

I don't suppose he has cared to notice... the people flying the helicopters and driving the boats to save people are predominantly white.

I've owned some Toyotas over the years. Good cars. Pretty easy for me to do repairs on (although the parts were more expensive than for American cars).

I'm glad you have the car you like! That is what counts, IMHO.

Okay! I really thought they said they were from St. Bernard Parish, but maybe I'm dreaming...

Since then Al Sharpton has made his appearance, and I'm fuming to high heaven....
