President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

If Tucker is bringing it up, we need to take credit. We're the ones forcing the truth about Nagin and Blanco to the surface, and other nuMedia that has joined us. Certainly he wouldn't do so on his own.

We have more than one police car at each open gas station here. Sometimes these police officers are the targets of angry people. My sister went out today to try to buy more gas and she took a cooler of bottled water to offer to the officers directing traffic at the gas station. Unfortunately, the station she went to ran out of gas long before she got near the officer directing traffic, and he was gone before she could offer him some iced water.

I HAVE SEEN THE PICTURES! When they show the WHOLE levee. The Barge is seetting on top of 2 houses on the other side..

Yet the Mainstream media is NOT reporting that, and instead trying to blame Bush Budget cuts...

We need to get that word around NOW!

I wonder how the hi-fives will go if the worst is discovered in St Bernards Parish. No cameras have been over there.

I might add that I appreciate everyone here. I've been able to communicate with some folks in Houma and the surrounding area. But I think talking here with everyone has helped me a lot. We all watched this thing develop, coming into and around New Orleans. We mostly feared the worst. But, even the worst, as we are seeing it happen it's still difficult to wrap our minds around it.

I just heard on Fox that they've got armed guards at the grocery warehouses in Baton Rouge. I'm beginning to worry that things could get out of hand very quickly in these Mississippi and Louisiana cities that are being overwhelmed by huge population increases without any ability to handle them.

Are you able to name your meds? Amazing that "Our Gulf Coast Neighbors" are on life sustaining medication yet can't remember the name of the med or the amount they have to take in order to get a new prescription.

I was thinking about this and I realized that I can tell you what meds I take, but I couldn't remember the amount without going and looking at the bottle. (and I'm in the medical profession!)

Landrieu said that her "greatest disappointment" is the lack of progress fixing the breached 17th Street levee.

Why don't you go over there yourself, Mary. Throwing brickbats at the breach would accomplish more than your throwing them at the people and agency trying to stop the water. Ironically, as I write this, WWL has a lengthy piece on the operation, including refueling choppers in mid-air to save time! Hole is 30 ft. deep and takes time to repair. Main engineer says hope to have it plugged tomorrow.

I agree strongly with you on one point - Bush must make an appeal to US businesses to restructure their worker commute requirements. people can't get gas, and we need to reduce gas consumption short term. something has to give. they should also cut postal delivery to 3 or 4 days per week maxiumum to reduce fuel consumption for mail delivery.
