President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"I have a concern... what do you think are the odds of the contamination of the Mississippi River in NO reaching other communities along the Mississippi."

NONE. And the amount of dilution and limited amount of time the bad stuff is flowing into the water, I don't think it will be that big of a deal in the long run for downstream and the ocean. I imagine in the sixties most of what is in the water was being dumped into the river anyway without any or too much treatment.

You may feel the effects of contamination as some of the thugs and gangbangers get mixed in with all of the decent folk who will be moving into new areas all over the country.

Did you hear him? The hype and all. You know, I'm thinking his delivery is always the same. But, this is the one event he's covered where it actually fits...:-)

Thanks for your report. I will now add Mary Landrieu to my list of people who get the Mute button from henceforth! How despicable.

And I guess she will have to be allowed in AF1 every time the Pres visits LA from now on.

DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THIS?

I was watching FNC earlier and Steve Harvey (the comedian) was at a Red Cross shelter in Baton Rouge. He was talking about some of the stories he's been hearing from different folks. He said an older genteleman told him he lived right next to the levey that broke. The man said 2 big grain barges crashed into the levey. Steve wondered why nobody else has heard that story. The man's house flooded quickly. He got himself and his handicapped wife up to the roof but she was swept away.

I wondered if that story is true, and if it is, why the media is not reporting it. Perhaps because it would take some of the wind out of their "Bush cut the levey funding, therefore it broke," sails.

Governor Blanco "commandeered" school buses on Friday and the schools were closed in at least three parishes of Central Louisiana. There were several bus drivers who delivered their buses as ordered but refused to participate in the convoy, stating "They don't pay me enough for this." Volunteers drove those buses and the Governor waived the CDL requirement in order to operate them.

Although the students stayed home, the school employees were required to report to work because of the paperwork involved in registering the refugee children for attendance at local schools. Rapides Parish alone is taking in over 1,000 children.

The schools will re-open on Tuesday, but parents are responsible for transporting children because the buses are still being used in the rescue effort.

People in Slidell on WLL, formed their own mini community, scavenged survival supplies. The first they've seen any gov or help was yesterday.

I'm afraid the anarchy we've all seen in New Orleans is going to be headed north real soon. I've talked to several people this afternoon who have tried to purchase gasoline. One ran out while in line and took a one-gallon can to the pump. She was turned away under the Jackson Mayor's new rules: no containers. The local tv stations report that many other residents who still don't have power were denied the ability to purchase 5 gallons of gas for their generators. The shelters here are begging for volunteers because many of those who have been helping can't get there because they don't have gas. If this situation is not alleviated very soon, I fear that we are going to see more and more violence here. People are hot, tired, hungry, and need to go to work in order to make a living. They can't do it if they can't get gas.

I urge you to think hard about your location and it's particular problems and what you can do for you should all heck break loose.

I've been doing that for about 30 years now. My family (adult children and grandchildren) are not being cooperative. It's my problem and not right to try to control them, but I've borne the brunt of it. They like the good life, the city life, and are totally unprepared, psychologically to do without things which disturbs me immensely, assuming one could even survive on one's own property over a prolonged period because you have to keep up the property taxes. How can you pay property taxes with no money?

Regarding buying up, I have to pay some things off first. I do have a good sw radio that uses D batteries. When it comes around to Christmas time, that will be a good time to perhaps give the adults some survival items that they can also put to use in their regular life. I think it would be kind of cool to have a radio you can wind up.

Thank you for your input. Becoming totally independent of the amenities of modern life would be almost impossible for me unless I became like the Amish. I don't know if newbies could even start a life like that if they had the will to do it.

I once remember a discussion group where one educated lady described the humble, homemade clothes the Amish wear in a rather haughty (to me - you can't always be sure when it's in writing - it was clear as a bell she didn't want to live like them though). The day could come when many people will rue the day they ever disdained self-sufficiency.

I would rather live in a tent on a farm with a shepherd's stove for heat rather than be packed like an animal in a dangerous shelter. The same thing could eventually happen no matter how you plan.

One thing I can guarandangtee you. The wealthy and politicians will have guarded compounds 24/7 or jet out of here, with foodstocks, generators and the fuel to run them, leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves, except for the humane helpers who give their all (like some have already done in NO in those hospitals). I think they got blindsided and weren't prepared for the thugs. You would think someone would have figured that out with the drug problem. They will go and do what they need to do to get a fix. The mayor of NO said that himself in an interview I heard.
