President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

Rita and MsNBC? Accusing someone of lying? LOL

Well, in the liberal world a Lie is the Truth, and the Truth is a Lie. Translation-they are saying Chertoff is telling the truth.

Well we haven't heard much from the St. B. area, and yet I believe it bore a huge brunt of the storm....basically liquified.
What if there are still people on rooftops???

They are! I've heard them call local stations and they are begging for help, no food or water either.

Saw this coming yesterday afternoon.

Will it get worse before it gets better?

Democrats and Liberals always have to have an audience in order to believe what they do. This thing about "character" is what is lacking in the Lib-Dems.

MSM can pound as hard as it wants to giving them "airspace" and "platform" to do their nasty verbal drive-bys, but overtime, people know that reality walks and bs talks.

Maybe I misunderstood, or maybe they misspoke, like Geraldo saying Los Angeles instead of New Orleans a couple time.

I need someone besides me to watch CNN for the next twenty minutes or so, LOL. They are about to talk about this week's history of the NO flooding.

NG asking if anyone has spoke to St. Benard Parish officials yet.

One woman who came out of the dome said the crowd beat to death someone who raped a little girl.

An earlier version of this was that the crowd beat to death a man who tried to stop the rape. Don't know which is correct, if either. Hope your version is the right one.

MSNBC interviewed a local professor who laid the blame for the entire disaster on FEMA and Bush. He praised the governor, state and local officials. His were the most intellectually deficient comments I've seen yet.

"Rumors have it the primary discussion between Nagin and Bush yesterday centered on federalizing the entire region. "

From the whining coming from certain political sectors it sounds like this is already happened de facto. I vote we call the recovery period "The Reconstruction" part II

A possibility occurred to me. The fires I have been spoeaking of was shown on NBC's local affiliate.

It may have been canned video, from a day or two ago.

Fingers crossed, because it was a BIG fire.

And I'm sure Bush was the one to advance the idea of federalizing the region since he's a smart man and knows they are clearly incompetant.

Actually, I suggested that as a possibility to consider in later time earlier. That a method to assess incompetance needs to be addresssed so if the local politicians are not capable of facing crisis, those that are will take over. Also mentioned this would give certain people worried about the Patriot Act heartburn.

It is possible the EOC is reacting to news reports about the lack of response in outlying parishes.
