President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

Re: Guns/Baton Rouge: You got that right. Plus they said ALL available housing is taken. Everything, not an apartment or hotel room left, and companies have already been buying up all available housing. Unreal!

again, the pictures of those NO school buses left to flood - when they could have been used to evacuate people who otherwise had no personal transportation, tells us all we need to know about the response of local government there.

LOL...surely I do.

This is what's happened to me this week. Each time I see and/or hear of something GOOD and fine and brave and self-less...I begin to "hear" the slant the liberal mindset will give it ASAP:)

I am stunned the Mayor of New Orleans has suggested that perhaps the CIA will "take him out" since he has criticized the federal government. The guy is mental. And it is clear, he never did have the leadership to lead the city in the time of disaster. He's a crackhead, imo.

And it appeared to go smoothly, because the people who knew how to do it were given the chance to get in place. I was getting SO frustrated with otherwise intelligent people were saying "Why isn't ... happening already?"

The New Orleans Mayor Nagin may be mentally ill.

It is a common symptom in paranoid schizophrenia to have the delusional belief that the CIA is after you.

Anyone watching CNN storm three-hour summary on now? Looking for someone to confirm that they just said the NO mayor ordered a mandatory evacuation the Thursday before the storm.

It's been the same for me all week. I wake up.. and within seconds I remember. It comes back. It's not a nightmare. It's real.

Yeah... you are very human for reacting the way you are. As a native of the area I appreciate it much.

I'm just stunned. I've been everywhere in NO multiple times. As we all feel down there, it's the town you don't necessarily want to live in but you also don't want to do without it. Now it's gone.

I've seen this coming for years and used to get pooh-poohed whenever I mentioned it. Right now... there's not a single "I told you so" in me. Just... stunned sadness.
