President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

That would be looting wouldn't it. The Governor would have to shot them.

Cant think of a better way to get shot than trying to break into a military installation.
Dont know about the Governor but base security will damm sure shoot them.

National Hurricane director had to call Mayor Nagin on Friday at home to beg him to order a mandatory evacuation. Knight Ridder article.

Thank you----

I am pissed....there are white people that have been rescued...I don't see them complaining about being called refugees...I KNOW that term connotes a picture of a lawless escape from a dictatorial govt...but, techinically they are seeking refuge...

BUT, they KNOW that...this is just another way to put white people in their place...and make their own rules of political correctness....

don't sweat that. let the Dems and the media push the racial issue as much as they want, a majority of americans won't buy it, especially after seeing the looting and mayhem in NO.

Yeah the fact that so many (200k?) are in Texas, proves that Nagin and his gov didnt have a plan at all.
Even as a Cat 5 was forecasted to give them a direct hit nearly 3 days prior.

My Parish, Ascension Parish, seems to be ground zero for ridiculous rumors. Part of the problem is the Baton Rouge media. They are so focused on Baton Rouge, that they think the surrounding parishes, those that are in their viewing area are invisible.

I was plenty steamed Monday and Tuesday, when the Baton Rouge anchors kept screaming at the Entergy people, what are you doing for Baton Rouge, over and over again. They didn't give a flying rip about W. Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, so we were not getting any news at all about what was occuring here.

In that environment, rumors started spreading. It's a damned shame, but it's reality. There was a rumor that the outlet mall in Gonzales was looted to the ground. This was going on, as my wife and I were actually dropping old baby clothes off there for the relief effort. The mall was maybe 1/4 full, quiet and extremely orderly at the time.

In so many important ways, the communications infrastructure has really let us down here. There is no community tv or radio in many areas, so unless those in the big cities feel charitable enough to let us know what is occuring in the outlying areas, we are stuck with rumor and innuendo.

Alas, my Grundig died. However, Walmart has one that does AM/FM/SW with an LED light that works on solar, crank, or D-Cells for cheap. I think I'll get a couple of those.
