President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Ya know, since the media, CBC, and dems insist that we must talk about the racial angle of this, let's talk about it. Most of those buses didn't start showing up to the city center, and especially at the convention center, until after Texas had ramped up massive amounts of shelter capacity. Yet buses have been evacuating the wealthier western suburbs to Baton Rouge since early Wed. evening. Is the state of LA trying to push the poorest of NOLA's inner city into Texas, hoping that most won't eventually return to the state?

Just asking, since Jesse Jackson says that the race angle of this is unavoidable.

That Chris Matthews is a true dyed in the wool anxiety driven radical liberal with little common sense or manners.

What city councilman in New York City said he would like to walk up and just slap a white man?

Oh yes Charles Barron on Hanity and Combes.

Well Chrissy Matthews I would like to walk up to you and just B!tch Slap a little common sense in to your extremely rude head.

What would have happened if the mayor started selling the fuel to his buddies? What would have happened if the hurricane had damaged the tanks and they were filled with water?

What would have happened if the generators got damaged because they were not hooked up properly?

As mush as I do not like regulations, they often have some reason behind them.

The reporters are too lazy to ask for reasons and some freepers are too quick to get caught by the media.

Bush praised him today - said he was doing a great job, and was working 24/7

I saw that butt-patting press conference. I wish these guys would stop congratulating each other! This has not been a stellar moment for anybody.

Jesse saying "all the helicopters were in iraq". wow, they sure got back fast!

I can just hear him saying that...sadly there are people who will believe him just as they think AIDS and crack were invented to kill black people.

**The article below was written in anticipation of the storm. Especially read Nagin's remarks in the last two short paragraphs.

This article was written last September, in 2004.

Were they talking about Hurricane Ivan?

If they're tried for being the worst PD in a major US city, will there be enough evidence to convict?

why is that FEMA's problem? just like the hotel that spent $25K to charter 10 buses to evacuate their own guests - FEMA comandeered them. why? its one thing to stop them and determine their purpose, but if their purpose is proper (evacuation) and in line with the overall goal of getting relief in there, they should be allowed to conduct a private operation.

if somebody has a private generator, and arranges to fuel it, that should be permissible.

Shep just said Nagin put the foreign tourists ahead of the line on the bus. Must have made friends with them while he was holed up in the Hyatt.
