President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I just heard a correspondent on CNN Headline News say wrt the relief "would help have come sooner if they (N.O. residents) had voted more often or differently".

Unbe-fn-lievable!

HERE WE GO...

WWL- A group is going to start busing people to the Former England Air Base, because they don't think they should continue bussing blacks out of the state...

Demanding FEMA make arraingements for them BEFORE they get there...

I see a few scared DEM legislators worried that thier base is disappearing!!!

She cannot handle anything and she is spinning the hiring of Witt as a great idea of hers, but I am sure after The feds came in and saw all the bad stuff and either she realized finally that he would need someone smart on her side, or she was told to hire him.

WWL Black Caucus: Doesnt like calling them "refugees".
Its an insult he says.

Wants LA to house people in military bases in state.
Driving buses soon that way with or without permission.

Congressional Black Caucus finally figure out they have lost their political base in New Orleans....scrambling to get people relocated in LA at closed military facilities.

Sucks to be Nagin. He will be mayor of an evacuated (no taxpayers) mudpuddle, under FEMA/federal control until rebuilt. Betcha the city charter does not have a continuation clause. You might check with cajungirl or someone from Louisana.

Has it occurred to anyone else that if we have sleeper cells waiting to strike the US, that they would have in the last few days? Im not saying they dont exist, only that this seems to prove their capabilities arent much.

This has also occured to me. Maybe because Louisiana is so small, they'd stick out like sore thumbs? I'm sure they're here in the US, just waiting, watching, and taking notes : (

Did you catch the part where they admitted they hadn't even got Gov. Blanco to open the closed military base they want to hold their "constituents" - yet were going to basically hijack those poor folks anyway! Amazing!

Yeah right.

Just heard one say that the military should not carry arms, but tents.

Now another bitching about semantics.

Why cant any of these people come up with anything constructive??

I'm counting on the fuel coming back shortly. I plan to sit it out for the next two days. The lines today are worse than they've been all week and the violence in the gas lines is escalating here (central Miss.).

Ever seen the Dallas passenger terminal? It's pathetically small. They typically get about 100 people in or out per day on Amtrak. The commuters are a different matter, but they're not going into the terminal building.
