President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Between the FEMA tankers and the restored TX-LA-MS-AL-FL pipelines, fuel should be back to the SE shortly.

Thanks for the reply. Im glad that is all you lost.
Not to play down the loss of your stereo and damage to your car.
I know how it feels to get ripped off.
Its a time to be aware of your surroundings for sure, I have taken certain preparations to guard against a potential rise in crime.

They have actually threatened to jail people who they think are spreading rumors? Wow. If so, that leads me to believe they would cover up a story that complicates things. Panic must always be avoided so I understand.

But I will keep my eyes open and read between the lines. Hopefully we have seen the worst of this disaster.

This may be another stupid question but hey, I'll bite..
Has anyone else experienced Post Office trouble? In Mich, that's pretty far away but some important mail, not related to that area, didn't arrive today. Just wondering if that could be hurrican related. I have no idea how the PO runs.

WWL

Updates as they come in on Katrina

02:12 PM CDT on Saturday, September 3, 2005
Tom Planchet

2:09 P.M. - PHOENIX (AP): One thousand or more refugees of Hurricane Katrina could begin arriving in Arizona as early as Sunday morning, said a spokeswoman for Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Some of the evacuees would likely be brought to Phoenix's Veterans Memorial Coliseum, where they would remain for a few weeks until other housing arrangements could be made, said Napolitano spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer.

"We will be working with people to transition them to other shelters," L'Ecuyer said.

Another possible location for temporarily housing refugees is the Tucson Convention Center, said Michael Carson, a spokesman for the city of Tucson.

Just on Fox - the Astrodome is allowing 13,000 more after all. Amazing that the fire marshall had enough authority to turn all of those people away. Codes are one thing, but this is an exceptional situation, and anyway the place is huge. Someone trumped his arse.

Seems they should follow orders of fire marshalls. Geesh, they'd know the limits don't ya think?

All we need is another tragedy.

Chertoff emphasized the the PRIMARY control would be federal.

First responders are now to be provided by federal forces. No more delays because Louisiana State Police or what's left of the NOPD aren't available. I would think that the Fire Department is in pretty good shape, provided it gets good cover against the thugs that take rifle pot-shots at the fire fighters.

Al Sharpton has called for a day of prayer tomorrow. Now this really burns me considering the way he acts. I shouldn't judge but his and JJ are busy running around telling everybody this is a black/white thing and then tells us to turn to God. I doubt God would be happy the way he's been. IMHO

Frist is a surgeon and he takes his oaths, ALL his oaths seriously. From what I saw, it wasn't a photo-op. Looks like he did what he could in Congress and then came down to the front lines to aid people in distress. Some of us remember the last prominent TN representative to take this course of action.

His name was Davy Crockett, and he died at the Alamo in 1836.

And getting talking points from the Klintoons and/or the DNC to put. That said, I belive the Sect'y of HS said they now had control, Sect'y of Labor said jobs would be availble, etc. With all the laws and things happening so quickly, tt's getting a bit confusing and blurred right now. So, just to get it straight in my mind, am I right in thinking that the Fed HS has control over the situation and area except for the state guard and other state and local law officers. What else does the state (e.g., Witt) have control of?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe nothing in terms of NG or LE assets.

There is a possibility, though, that this may be a ploy by the Clintons to try to get Bush to react by federalizing the state NG, which he can certainly do, but which their media allies will then spin as Bush playing politics during a disaster.

I doubt it will work though; Bush does not think and work on these things politically; he just does his job and make sure people under him do theirs.

Therefore, I think the play by the Clintons will be to have their shill Witt manouver the Louisiana Guard and LEOs and the media in such a way as to reinforce the meme that the federal government has failed and the local and state Democrats will saving the day.
