Katrina Live Thread, Part XIV

President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

82nd airborne, 1st calvary, 1st and 2nd MEU will be coming in to do search and rescue, and they will not tolerate thugs preying on the innocents

Is this official martial law or is this what President Bush meant by not getting bogged down in bureaucracy? I've been wondering about this since I heard his weekly address earlier. (In any case, it's the right thing to do, IMO.)

Another way that Jesse Jackson needs to be embarrassed, is on Larry King the other night, he was ragging on Bush, yet again, complaining about not having any black people in charge...

His point being, I guess, that if there were black people in charge, they would care more, or something...

Anyway...come to find out, that the MAIN MAN in charge, Gen. Honore, IS black.

Has Jesse apologized yet to President Bush??? uh, no

Are you listening to FOX right now??

Katherine Herridge asked the Lt. General (I'm not even gonna try to guess at spelling his name) a question, and then actually let him talk for at least 3 minutes without interrupting.

This might be a FIRST for cable news!

Hope Katherine doesn't lose her union card over this.

Are we still going with the reports that 80% of NOLA was evac'd before the hurricane? Does this make sense with the numbers doming out now? Trying to do the math..

Stories that I've heard concerning the Astrodome are very disheartening. Complaints because the clothing donations are "used". Complaints about the wait for shower facilities. Complaints about the lack of apts. available. There are some nice stories, also. But volunteers are getting discouraged and may stop showing up.

That is some bizzare logic.

Not at all, and they have plenty more experience than arm chair captains.

For goodness sakes, people in the best of situations yesterday were hoarding gasoline and fighting in Charlotte because they were told to conserve. Add desperation and heat to the situation, and chaos results without an infrastructure for distribution.

" the primary disaster here would be an earthquake and there are not advance warnings for those, so our family could and may be in need of help after one."

You live in the same state I do, and I, like you, have also been thinking that I need to get a survival kit all in one place. Not only do we have to worry about earthquakes, we also need to worry about volanoes errupting. I think many of us look at Mt. Rainier, especially if the sun is shining on it, and admire the beauty (doesn't the mountain look beautiful today). However, was reminded on the radio yesterday that it is one of the biggest volcanoes around and if it ever errupts, we're all in big trouble.

That was Lt. General Honore, the commander of the Joint Task Force in New Orleans. His no-nonsense description of the amout of time it takes to mount an operation this size in the wake of such a powerful storm exposes the MSM's lie that there was unnecessary delay. The left is going down the "Bush waited" path and they look like idiots.

General Honore: "The storm gets a vote... We're not stuck on stupid."

Im not sure where all these people will stay.

An area that holds 5k seating, may hold 1k cots and enough space for people and supplies.

Fox has been improving significantly.....actually doing real news coverage with hard news journalism.

They must have gotten the message and probably literally sent a memo out about how to get their ducks in a row here.

They even broke a story yesterday.

I've been watching the fire at the dock. I had heard the river was low. But, doesn't it look a tad on the high side right there?
