President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

< I saw that Mexico has offerred assistance. Does anyone know what form this assistance is taking? Money? Oil? 1 million Mexicans to form a bucket brigade to bail out the soup? >

Maybe the evacuees will take the jobs that the illegals do because no one else will do them? Hey, that would be interesting...illegals staying home becase they can't find work in the USA. That sounds good.

"I also saw an interview (replay) with Jesse Jackson..and he was talking some jibberish about slave ships landing in New Orleans, and that the black people were kept "down" right off the slave ships..."

Yeah, I heard that and turned to my wife and said, "Did you hear that?" She is from Australia and said, "Didn't the French own it then".

Not your imagination, & if they don't quit this crap soon it will backfire in the form of some folks refusing to continue to give $ to the needed charities

He said he told Bush that if he and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco did not "get on the same page as far as chain of command is concerned," New Orleans would continue to slide into anarchy."

What exactly does he mean by that ??

this a fantastic point that several people haven't gotten. You don't send in the calvary if they are going to be dehydrated and starving in 24 hours also.
You don't do an air drop of "some" food and water without creating a riot situation.
It's cold hard facts that rely on planning, staging and execution.

I can't believe that stupid moron. The best part of the interview was when they closed out identifying her as a former Senator. She asked why didn't they let people cross the river to get out. If she's referring to the Mississippi, somebody needs to tell the dumb strumpet that the damage is worse there.

I noticed that initally, the first few days, CNN's coverage was superior to Fox.

Now, CNN has gone into political, agenda-driven reporting, and I'm finding Fox's reporting better.

MSNBC is a joke.

There was a Vietnamese gentleman interviewed early on that had lost everything. He was in Miss., I think. He was very positive...said he came here with nothing and built a life and he'll do it again.

There is something so sad about the people that would sit on a bridge for 4 days, totally at a loss about how to help themselves. Just sitting and waiting for someone to tell them what to do.....

That is some bizzare logic.

Let the people die of dehydration, disease, and hunger rather than risk a 'possible' riot by worn out, tired masses.
