Katrina Live Thread, Part XIV

President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Agree. The syndrome you describe is best known as "microwave mentality".

"If you think watching TV is a priority to pulling people off rooftops, then, it's just absolutely beyond me to even attempt further explaination."

These are different functions. In a normal emergency command structure, you have people on the front lines doing the emergency work and rescues, and you also have a command structure coordinating the efforts, assessing incoming data from many sources and then sending out orders. This may well have broken down in this situation, and again, that is not a media problem. The LA government appears to have been caught completely flat-footed.

Nice chatting with you. Best wishes --

Maybe he should check with the Monroe, Louisiana family who took in a few evacuees from Katrina. They gave them a safe place to sleep, showers, hot food, clean clothes, etc. The thanks they got...they were murdered in their sleep."

I have not heard about that. Do you have the link to that story? Thanks.

A distinguished black gentleman on Fox just stated very clearly that the "blame" for this does not rest with President Bush.

I heard him.

I hope the Bush bashing freepers were listening and stop posting their nonsense.

Whoa. A distinguished black gentleman on Fox just stated very clearly that the "blame" for this does not rest with President Bush. It rests with the folks responsible for providing leadership on the ground when the disaster strikes.

Think his name is Herman Cain....

Anyone know who he is ??? (maybe he should be mayor ??)

As a casual but interested observer of New Orleans political history, I agree with the lady on Fox who just said if we start throwing money at New Orleans - we will just be throwing it at the same corrupt politicians who gave New Orleans this mess. (lot of paraphrasing here but that is the gist of what she was saying.) I am wondering if federally occupying NO for the next 10 years would clean out the cesspool.

Morning!

I wonder who really wrote that letter. Missus Blanco was an incoherent wreck, last time I saw her.

Speaking of morning, I woke up on the couch with Geraldo squawking on tv. Lovely way to start the day....

NO mayor said GWB sent down a "John Wayne **dude", that was gonna kick a$$, & get some things done.
....

(smiling) I saw the very tall three star military General being goded by some silly female twit reporter bouncing along, trying to keep up with his walking pace. You could see the smirk on his face, it read, "oh honey, I could easily eat you for a snack" as he KEPT MARCHING FORWARD. She really made herself look stupid, like a bratty whiney child asking for a lollipop in the midst of a disaster and UNNECESSARILY distracting relief & rescue efforts. Most of those MSM reporters on location are a nuissance and deserve a strong backhanded slap.

I haven't heard a single SNAKE story in the whole history of this reporting

I think he was on Larry King Live. Oh - you meant real snakes, not Al Sharpton. My mistake.

I suspect that young men will become a leader of some sort. He took initiative when it called for it.

You are so right about the dependency on government.

It's left over from the Cold War, when there were a lot of defense facilities in Texas. I'm sure there's more than one set of plans, but the one I saw involved Ft. Worth (Carswell AFB), Killeen (Ft. Hood), and Houston (petrochem) getting creamed by airburst nukes that for whatever reason only killed 10% of the populace in the cities - worst case scenario in terms of having to deal with evacuees, as a surface hit would leave none.

I'm sure that somewhere, someone keeps that updated.

AP says dome evacuations stopped in order to start convention center evacuations. There are 5000 in the dome and 25000 in the convention center. Good choice to go to the most desperate place but just wondering why they can't do both.

Anyway, any evacuations is great news, but I still can't believe that CNN is not carrying the pictures. I can't bear to watch them anymore.
