President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is opening today in Bayou La Batre, Ala.

I wonder if Forrest will take them out in his boat.

I read even a local veternarian has opened up his shelter for any pets of evacuees in town, for indefinite stays!

They will keep them until the families are settled and able to have their pets at home once again.

Help in every manner is pouring in throughout the local Southern towns.

Too bad the national media is not focused more on that.

Mary Jones, a Red Cross volunteer from Tulsa, Okla., moves furniture in a barracks in a remote National Guard camp in Camp Gruber, Okla. in preparation for the expected arrival of at least 2,000 evacuees from hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.

I agree...Carlson has had some pretty good shows during this! I thought I was the only one. He comes across as a real average guy and not a drama queen like the daytime boys like Geraldo and Shep and Cooper. He just needs to lose that gay bow tie. I cant take people seriously if they wear one of those.

Few had BOBs (bug-out-bags) with even a minimum of 3 days of food and some water. Even fewer had a simple battery operating AM radio to get a warning of the impending flood.

I just heard some guy on C-Span lamenting the fact that after millions and millions of dollars spent to raise awareness, fewer than 50% of the people at risk had a hurricane plan.

They are driving this story; all you had to do was listen for "the question of the day."

Was Race a Factor????

All the channels have it today; and Fox has it tomorrow night, too!

I wonder what their next talking point will be?

Oh, thanks a lot... if terrorists take out Glen Canyon that will take out Hoover, Davis, etc... and we are in the path... I figure I'll have water lapping at my front door. Remember there is only one road in or out of here... but it would do a lot of damage in Henderson area, too... not to mention Bullhead City and Laughlin.

I have been listening to a live NG scanner feed where people evacuated from New Orleans are being off loaded from planes, processed, and then taken to two sites: Kelly and Levi Strauss. Very interesting to listen to the logistics of just what it takes to get everything taken care of at the other end. It sounds like the Kelly site is nearly full and they are beginning to take people to the Levi Strauss site, although they are still waiting on food, water, blankets and additional cots to arrive at the Levi site. So far I have only heard of one problem with someone who was evacuated. A plane due to arrive at their location has an unruly passenger, who will be dealt with when the plane lands.

The Astrodome actually was designed as an emergency shelter, though.

And that ventilation systems has been upgraded at least three times that I can think of. The big problem it has is that it can't be turned off - so they keep it at a nice 72F inside 24/7/365.

The last upgrade was in the early 90s. Also, they limited people in the Astrodome to 12K, sending the rest to Reliant and the convention center.
12K people can camp out in the Astrodome for quite a while without taxing it too much.

FGS, Trent Lott lost HIS house and it's HIS state and he is not as hysterical as Scarborough.

Joe is a ... well dang .. I can't type it .. but you know what I mean

The Hurricane hit on Monday, the Levee broke on Tuesday and for the last 3 days they have been trying to clear roads, airports, police the cities, feed a half a million people and transport them

And that is just ONE city

Yep .. the Feds haven't been doing a dang thing

Like, I said ... Go to hell Joe!

Palacios is takin' em, Port Lavaca is takin' em, Victoria is takin' em. BUT here in south Texas it's gonna be interesting with 2 "minorities" where one "minority" is actually a "majority".

They'll kill each other for sure.
