President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Well, you leave me no choice,,,and let's just keep the don't ask don't tell rule here and let me keep my sanity
That is what is driving me nuts too. Everyone from the Mayor on down, just sat back and whined. I think my monetary donations will go to the Houston effort. They appear to be handling the situation very well. Shame on the State of LA and the City of NO for not being better prepared for this.
A bunch of things such as havving a better evacuation plan, plans for communications, and pre-staged supplies, etc. We're now five days after the hurricane and significant federal aid just began arriving.
Your very welcome. There are quite a few links posted by NautiNurse at the top of each of these threads, this being the XIVth. If you or others know the home location, especially the Parish, of your co-workers in the NO area, a link posted there has been invaluable to NO residents. Go to nola.com, and click on the Parish Forum of interest. You will find lots of folks are looking for and actually finding loved ones and friends on those forums. Many folks in the NO area on the ground are still communicating via the Web to get word out about conditions on the ground and folks in their neighborhoods.
Mary Landrieu on WWL just talking about how she told President Bush that she wants a CABINET LEVEL position made just to deal with New Orleans and the surrounding parishes...the rebuilding and such...
EXCUSE ME....a cabinet level positions requires what? oh, yeah, Senate approval...and WHO doesn't approve Bush's nominees without filibusters and "holds" put on them for pet legislative projects...????
Why that would be Mary Landrieu's very own party...
She is looney-tunes!!!!
Blame NOW.
With their version of "equal rights to everything" comes equal responsibility, something that the feminists didn't think of. That was the end of "women and children first".
Equal rights under the law and in society? Great, I'm all for it - if it's truly equal. Persecuting men? Don't be surprised if that backfires - like it did here.

That's why I gave to Samaritan's Purse. Franklin Graham has had his people in constantly bombed Sudan helping people for years.
"{a little boy cried out "Snowball! Snowball!" "
I want that dog, and wish I could give him back to the boy, anyone know how I can adopt the dog temp?
Heavy on the "BS" part. Story is twisted for the benefit of the ignorant who aren't on FR.
Wiseguy, LOL.
I don't know about transporting gas, but you could tow a car full of gas and load up on supplies...bring it all down there and load the family in the other car and take them to your place.
Can't do that cause we might not be able to get enough gas to get back,,,,then we'd be stuck there using up what little resources they have,,,we have almost done that, believe me! Family down there says don't come, you won't get enough gas to get any of us out,,,
Actually it did: From the report:
It predicted that 200,000 people or more would be unwilling or unable to heed evacuation orders and thousands would die, that people would be housed in the Superdome, that aid workers would find it difficult to gain access to the city as roads became impassable, as well as many other of the consequences that actually unfolded after Katrina hit this week.
Oh, hoosiermama, why did you go and get all "grateful"...
and ruin a perfectly good (at times) griping and whining thread?
LOL
I see. Maybe he did bring them some water and didn't mention it or maybe he couldn't get a hold of water to bring to anyone. The reporters have to survive too. I heard one report that people were trying to steal the gas tanks from on top of one of those satellite trucks. People get desperate. Also, I heard tonight that there are checkpoints set up and people aren't allowed to leave the city until they are told they can. Maybe they check what people are bringing in and want to control where the water gets taken to? I know FEMA took buses from people in a hotel who ordered and paid for them to give them to other people.
"Well, there was a report that they hit a helicopter that was trying to service a hospital."
I heard that they pilot saw firearms and aborted a landing at a hospital.
The Bush administration did reduce funding for NO flood control, but that had no bearing on this disaster. NO has had decades to solve this, and hasn't done it. There was a story reposted in FR from 2001, saying LA officials refused to buy into a major fed program to fortify the levees. They demanded 100% fed funding, didn't get it, so the improvements never happened. I believe this was in the 90s.
I don't mind Shep (but don't find him attractive). I do agree that he looks so much better without his makeup.
I've heard numerous reports on TV of people being shot or being shot at, and of rescue attempts having to be suspended.
