President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

NO was a cess pool. Hopefully this will help some of the folks to a new better life. The kind of society that produces some of the animals we have seen the past few days, doesn't need to be rebuilt.

Scanner Update - NG Reports Again that LSP Liason has disappeared again and has not been on seen for 'hours'. - NG looking for escort for buses at Staging and Flight Line. - EMS Ops getting requests for blankets. - NG reports people milling around buses and its hampering loading. No PD help on scene to assist. - Unoccupied NOLA counties vehicle sitting in loading/unloading area - need to be removed.

More of the same problem which the media and others can't understand. The LOCAL framework is essential for the system to work. The state supports. Both must practice their plans consistently to be effective. The feds merely get plugged in.

The problems in Louisiana are Louisiana's failure, not Bush.

How do you know it is hearsay? Are you there?

No. The quote from Shep was a misquote. They weren't "locked" in, the road was blocked. Two completely different concepts.

Don't think any authorities would lock people in & risk a fire or other trouble a la New York Triangle Fire. Thus why I thought Shep was exaggerating

I was laughing at YOU. YOU are the joke.

and it was sarcasm but I guess that you can't grasp that, as well as the fact others have emotions and react differently.

I don't wonder what those people are saying anymore. They are vile, driven by so much hate for based on lies from the left wing that they are beyond bringing into the debate.
I sincerely hope their vile hatred influences their ability to breed. No child deserves to grow up in an environment of utter personal hate day by day.

Only "seems" to be? I said on one of the earlier threads that this reminds me of the '77 blizzard in Chicago, where all the money that was supposed to go for blizzard planning went to a Machine crony and the "plan" was still warm from the Xerox machine when they finally ginned one up after most of the snow eventually melted.

I just got home from work a little while ago, but I heard Shep and Geraldo on XM in the car and watched them here. They are very emotional, but I would be, too, if I had seen what they have seen.

Today I spoke to several people who evacuated New Orleans at various times, Saturday through today (this one from his roof, by helicopter -- he had stayed to care for his ill, elderly mother). These people have suffered tremendously. Just to hear about it over the phone was very difficult. I can't imagine what it would be like to witness it in person. Even reporters have hearts. To some, it may seem unprofessional, but I find it hard to criticize them. It takes a tremendous amount of courage just to be in New Orleans at this time.

I feel much more optimistic today than I did yesterday. Perhaps it's because I had my first real meal today at a restaurant next to my building in downtown Jackson -- salad, broccoli, squash, zucchini, turnip greens. These may seem like ordinary things to many people, but they weren't available at my grocery store yesterday, and we are 200 miles from the devastation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I haven't had a green vegetable since Sunday, so it was wonderful.

The most encouraging news for central Mississippi is that the gas shortage may be easing somewhat as supplies are becoming more plentiful. This is good, because the Mississippi economy has taken a real hit, and we don't need a "disaster within the disaster" as the Clarion-Ledger editorialized today. My neighbors spent the night lined up for gas, and were lucky enough to get 10 gallons at 7:45 this morning -- after waiting since 11:00 p.m. last night.

Thanks to those of you who keep these threads going and to all of you who are contributing money and offers of help to us here in the South.

36 people from our New Orleans Office are still unaccounted for. I am going to look for them on the various missing persons websites this weekend. Hopefully, they are alive, but just unable to communicate.

who is to say he hasn't been seeing bodies in the water the entire time and just isn't saying it?

Oh hell he wouldn't be milking the one body then. But what if he did see hundreds of bodies. This is the greatest disaster in our history and with that comes death and if this pans out like officials are saying it could be in the 10s of thousands. If these guys can't wrap their minds around it and keep some semblance of calm then they should get the hell out.

"We knew Rudy and Pataki were great back then, now we see they were even greater than we imagined"

I agree they were good leaders. And I'm going to say the planning and execution for relief from a hurricane in NO was terrible. The mayor and gov. down there deserve each other. The Twin Towers were enormous and all but I think it's safe to say the enormity of this disaster is a magnitude of order larger than the Twin Towers coming down.

He also said he was told by the Governor that 40,000 people were coming to help.
He said "Don't lie about 40,000 people coming to help"
I pray for him. I don't blame him at all.
I think he is realizing that he could have risen to the occasion, but he was ham-strung (on purpose?) by the Governor.
