SASKATOON -- Prime Minister Paul Martin says Canada will respond to an international call for help to provide more oil supplies to stabilize the world market.
Martin says the International Energy Agency is putting out a call to 27 member countries to release reserves and increase exports.
He says he has checked with provinces and oil companies and Canada will be increasing supplies, although he stresses the aid effort won't lead to a shortage for Canadians.
Motorists have already been hammered at the gas pumps as world markets respond to energy price spikes brought on in part by damage to the U.S. Gulf Coast supply by hurricane Katrina.
Martin says increasing supply is a necessary step to stabilize prices and give aid to Americans dealing with the fallout from Katrina.
The prime minister was speaking to reporters while visiting Saskatoon for Saskatchewan's centennial.

I think it's well above half of the population that doesn't "get it".
That partially explains why gas futures are down today. Some LA refineries are working just fine. Hope those 20 EU ships carrying oil make it here quick.

Lets see, first it was a so-called shortage (in the 70's). Now we learn the truth that it's just OPEC closing the spigot to jack up prices. The people of course forget all this as we're being told its the (recent) storm that 's responsible . What next? How about a storm on Europa? Maybe that will effect prices and availability next?
The united states of America has more natural resources then ANY other country in the world. Yet the real shortage is the lack of statesmen who care more for the well being of their country then lining their pockets. All we have is politicians who have no backbone whatsoever or simply don't give a rats @ss about this country and are in D.C. (District of Criminals) to cash in.
The people are as much to blame as the trash they voted into office. People haven't voted for a man or woman that will do the best for the country, no they've been voting for someone who'll give them what they want.
I'm always amazed when I here people bi*tch and complain about the cost of fuel, yet these same people will go into a store (for a few minutes or more) while their automobile sits outside running, or you go into their home and the heat is set so high, yet they'll be at the door (wide open) talking to someone instead of either inviting them in or going outside to talk to them.
People if you would like to see these prices drop, then STOP being so damn wasteful. If you plan on going to town to shop, plan on it with a neighbor or a friend and go together and share the cost of fuel, etc. If you only need a few things and the stores isn't that far away and your able (my grandmother used to walk a mile to the store and back twice a week with her little cart. She was in her 80's when she did this.) and weather is good, walk.
There are so many ways to save on fuel, but people have become so accustomed to being wasteful.
While I do believe all these so-called shortages are nothing more then man made, the people have (through their wasteful habits) added too the creation of these artificial shortages. Now we must all live by these consequences.
Isn't every oil facility and refinery around the world (save Saudi and Venezuela) going flat out already.
OK I stand corrected. Since there's obviously no oil shortage (created or otherwise), there's a oil refinery shortage. See there's the real problem. (/sacasm)
