Blaming President Bush; our readers weigh in

I bring this up because I saw a lot of ambulances, police cars, and fire equipment flooded in the Katrina footage. It will be interesting to see what the NO preplanning was since their director of emergency response is all over the tv blaming Bush. We went through Frances (cat 4) and three weeks later Jeanne (cat 3) last year and I think Palm Beach County and Jeb Bush did a pretty good job. It's up to local and state people to tell the feds what they need and to run the emergency command centers, not just throw their arms up in the air and start blaming everyone else.

Florida has GOP leadership and LA and New Orleans has corrupt Democrats.

While I was at the doctor this am, there was a woman on the sidewalk talking to another, practically screaming, "He's the worst president we've ever had! The worst!"

The left is going berserk.

Ruined New Orleans school buses, NOT used to evacuate the poor. Is New Orleans govt incompetence Bush's fault?

Even if they were simply driven empty to high ground, they could have been put into use days ago for the post Katrina evacuation.

Mayor Gumbo needs to look in the mirror when assigning blame for this disaster.

This disaster is only reinforcing my belief that the LESS you depend on the government to meet your needs, the better off you are. It is also a PERFECT example of why President Bush has been so big on "Faith Based Initiatives" - they are the ones getting the job done right now!!

But you can take this to the bank, when all is said and done, Katrina will be "all Bush's fault" any way they can!!

Good points as you would expect on Powerline. I s'pect if Bush were even remotely competent and if FEMA were not so poorly managed by a Republican administration, there would never have been a single life lost and New Orleans would be 110% rebuilt by now and humming like an efficient hive.

Two very good points. It appears that, all said and done, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the Southern Baptist charities, Catholic Relief Services, and the Army have done a fine job considering what they face. All the state of Louisiana's pols have done is throw hysterical accusations about.

School buses are uncomfortable and besides these buses are limited only to the "Vote Or Die" campaign on election day...

Yes Travis,

The local authorities also released bus drivers and taxi drivers telling them to take care of their own families. Why not each bus driver driving his bus out of town with his family and the rest of the bus full.

Another problem, the release of prisoners. Very commendable from the stand point of a prison sentence not being a life sentence. But these trouble makers could have been moved early. Or moved in the prison to higher level cells and left for pick up from their cells later. Simply releasing them and warning the public when the police were being pulled out was a very bad decision. Something I can only believe would happen in a city run by democrats.

MSNBC just had a guy on named Dan somebody, an MSNBC analyst, who gave a good overview on how things aren't done as easily as the critics think (e.g. Why do air drops of food? Because history shows they can land on top of people); and he basically said (said he hated to say it) that the city and state govt's screwed up.

So what are the role and responsibility of the LA governorship and NO mayorship in this disaster? Were they recent migrants to the state and didn't know its history?
If Bush were the president during the 2 most recent large killer earthquakes in California, he would have been blamed for that too.

Yes. Although I am retired now, I was a Safety Engineer for part of my career. I know how to do a hazard analysis and identify what could go wrong. Massive flooding could have been anticipated. Loss of power always happens in hurricanes. Breakdown in the chain of command could be anticipated. Failures of roads, bridges, and debris could be anticipated. Heck, even people staying home when they were told to get out could have been anticipated.

The failure to plan and anticipate the consequences of this storm is a local problem. We don't have the federal government come in and take charge of local issues in this country. But for local governments to succeed, the local people have to vote for true leadership. We do get the government we deserve, don't we?

I have yet to see a news conference from the Governor's Command Center or from the Mayor's Command Center. I wonder if they have a Command Center or if their preparation and response is just one big out stretched palm pointed toward Washington? I can tell you that I am getting sick of all the bashing and I am afraid that they are going to turn off a lot of well meaning people who are giving their time and money to this cause.
