The choice you propose is an artificial construct. Along with people needing help, come their pets, whether they have evacuated already or still need help. These organizations are there to help within their ability to begin filling the many needs that are competing for attention in New Orleans and surrounds.

I feel bad for the abandoned pets, I do, but the TRULY helpless are those who still, as of last night before the arrival of National Guard and Delta forces, wait rescue and whose rescue attempts were disrupted by looters and thugs shooting at the rescue teams and driving them temporarily away. Hopefully, pets can be helped, but not ahead of people.

This forwards what is hoped to be a comprehensive list of animal-related resources regarding Hurricane Katrina

Ping to post #313. Great work, Doc.

>> It's time to set these weenies straight and make them understand that an animal's life is secondary to human life. <<

Depends on who the human is. My dog's life is worth more than ALL the damned looters down there in NO right now.

Animals will at least help themselves and not depend on the gov't to feed, house, and cloth them.

My dog is my family and my very best friend. I'd save his life over anyone of the looters.

you seem to forget the many search and rescue dogs who were used to find the humans. if you were there i would hope that their nose was stopped up.

This may have been posted, if so, my apology:

"Pets were not allowed on the bus, and when a police officer confiscated a little boy's dog, the child cried until he vomited.

"Snowball, snowball," he cried."

Thanks for your post. I just signed up to foster a pet, whether I get to or not remains to be seen. I'm astonished at the lack of compassion by some posters on this thread. I'm glad you all can be so dispassionate in your feelings, I sure can't. I've had to stop watching the tube and reading most news reports because they upset me so and the thought of lost animals just add to the upset.

The story was posted at post #47. Better to have it posted twice, though, than to have someone miss it.

I took $100. to the Houston SPCA yesterday. Before some of you ask what I have done for the humans, let me say the $100. was just a small fraction of what I gave yesterday to the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. I am at this moment taking a rest from collecting household items (from my own kitchen) that I will be taking to 2 apartments that have been rented for 2 black families who are moving to Houston.

We who love our animals also love and respect human life so give it a rest..... some of you.

" For crying out loud, dogs eat other animal feces and live."

A Biblical response to you is in order: "Go and do thou likewise."

Should people have pets at all? They eat food that could be given to starving people.

To hell with the pets. Resources should be spent to care for children, the sick and the old before any damn dog.

All those pets in the car would have taken up room that could have been given to rescue a person Before the flood. Isn't that a wrong priority too?

At least the dogs don't shoot when you try to rescue them.

So true!
