Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless
NY Post ^ | 9/2/2005 | Heidi Singer

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

If ONE human dies because these moonbats were saving dogs and cats, they should be charged with muder (depraved indifference).

Animal rescuers will be, at minimum, another set of eyes and ears to HELP FIND humans, even if they don't have the right kind of equipment to save humans.

Then they can let the Coast Guard, National Guard etc. know where to find them by pinpointing the humans' locations.

And this is all being done with PRIVATE money, with privately supplied equipment, and with volunteers. Why would you want to stop them - or even more absurdly, punish them?

Thank you for posting this and taking the slings and arrows--we should do what we can for any living thing.
Of course, we help people first but if we can save an animal that is destined to die--we try to do that too.

But I'd throw every one of them overboard to save one human being.

You need to change your handle to Ruthless4ever. ;) (Although I agree with you.)

The fact that there are a few groups devoted to saving lost and suffering domestic animals does not mean humans are being ignored.

Yes it does because those same people and equipment could be used to save people.

When was it decided that caring for pets or domesticated animals was a liberal mindset?? All I wanted to do was highlight the other victims of this tragedy. If you don't want to help that's fine, but your unneeded comments really disappoint me. I am a conservative republican and have been a lurker here for over a year and was always very impressed with the compassion shown by the members.

Now PETA can put up or shut up.

What should PETA do? Send in a euthanasia van?

PETA's sole reason for existance is to collect money from well meaning, misguided fools who believe Bambi was a documentary.

There are enough moonbats in NOLA now; the last thing they need is a pack of animal nuts (and you ARE nuts to go into NO if your not part of the organized relief effort) to worry about.

That is not at all the point here.

People are as attached to their pets as they are to their families.

The entire scene here is an ongoing tragedy that gets worse and worse instead of better and better.

Aside from the fact that 9-11 was a deliberate attack on the U.S., this dwarfs 9-11 a thousandfold.

Agreed, just giving them a chance to look even more hypocritical than usual.

No, I would conscript them into saving humans. Their equipment and abilities are needed for people right now. This is a state of emergency and these groups should be FORCED to save people, not animals.

We are the richest country in the world. We can do both.

We have a shortage of manpower and a crisis that needs action NOW. We do not have time, nor resources to do both right now.

Did any of you geniuses stop to think that thousands of rotting carcasses of dogs, cats, horses and livestock is going to add to the toxic soup of the flood waters? There are thousands rescuing people and I'm sure anyone snatching a dog off a rooftop would also grab any people they find there. If one animal rescue team pulls one baby out of a house they've saved more humans than all you keyboard critics put together.

I've already given to Noahswish.

I'm sorry, but I can't read the rest of the article, nor the rest of this thread. I'll lose it.

Let's adopt another dog or cat from our local shelter, so they'll have room for any of these animals that may come our way, especially those of us in Texas.

People are as attached to their pets as they are to their families.

That is irrelevant right now. The priority is to rescue people. Animals be damned. They are not family, not in this situation.

All personnel and equipment needs to be directed at helping PEOPLE.
