Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless
NY Post ^ | 9/2/2005 | Heidi Singer

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

An animal's life is worth more than the life of those who are looting and pillaging and raping, IMO.

Did you drive today? If so, should we prosecute you for using a scarce resource that would be better allocated to the disaster area?

Actually, no I did not drive today. I'm trying to cut back on unnecessary trips.

Make any donation that you please; I'm proud of you for it.

Don't you see what I am saying? IMHO, it is insane to waste resourses on pets when PEOPLE are dying?

OK, something needs to be done for the animals, but right NOW that shouldn't be our priority.

Everyone is on edge, and I for one am tired of engaging people who are cruising the forum looking for someone to take their anger out on. You see something that needs done? DO IT. Stop taking out your state of angst about this disaster on other FReepers.

Well said. I am astonished at the venom on the board over the last few days. People don't realize that those of us who do volunteer work with animals are just shifting our efforts to a place with greater need.

In a crisis, every little bit helps.

"I don't have to brag about my efforts in public."

No, you just have to inflict your point of view on everyone in public. Get a grip already. Everyone knows how you feel, so need to continue on this thread!

Resources aren't scarce in this country, this country has more wealth and resources than we need. They're just in the wrong place. In the days to come, people and supplies will be arriving en masse to New Orleans, and will each bring their special talents. ALL are needed.

You've made your point. You aren't going to stop animal rescues or assist people rescues by flaming FReepers. Your energy here, is a waste.

Nobody here is advocating putting animals before people. There is great need in so many areas. If some choose to donate to a group like Noah's Wish, then let them do so in peace. It is an act of selflessness and generosity.

Children practice learning to love and protect smaller, helpless creatures, by loving and protecting pets. The learning comes in very handy later, when they become parents.

Keep your chin up, FRiend. The (misplaced priority) bleeding hearts are in the house.

They don't understand that I *love* animals and have taken care of many, many abandoned animals.

They cannot fathom that I would never put the life of an animal over a human, especially in a crisis.

I wish I could adopt one of these animals but I've reached my 2 pet limit for my condo.

I reached mine 2 cats ago....and I'm on the board. :)

Had I lived in NOLA, I'd have left on Friday with all my animals with me.

Me too, but I'd have been pulling a horse trailer too.

Those who have evacuated with their pets will also need help as their own resources wear thin. It's not wrong to help them.

"Because I feel that as a country we have become so decadent...."

You would prefer that our country not be so wealthy and successfull?

The article is talking mainly about rescuers plucking dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from the water. Most of these animals are small and light.

Yes, and if you have a boat in New Orleans right now, you should be saving people. PERIOD.

Thanks for this, I'm going to give as much as I can to both the Humane Society and Catholic Charities.

Perhaps he was referring to choosing a dog over you.

Seems like a dog would be more of a pleasant companion, in any event.

There are a disturbing number of people who post here who seem to equate a love for pets and animals with liberalism.

The two are in [no] way connected.

You are right they aren't connected. I think you are confusing folks pointing out the stupidity of placing animals before humans with connecting love and liberalism.

Though the arguments may not be eloquent the validity of the point to deliberately search for and rescue animals WHILE humans are still suffering is idiodic. The same goes for folks who place their own life in jeopardy, ie not evacuating because of their pets. They have now placed an extra strain on search and rescue resources and causing resuers to risk their lives to save them ONLY because of their pets!

Absolute stupidity!!!

I can fathom that.... what I can't fathom is why you're wasting time sitting here ranting. What's ~THAT~ achieving?

No. Look what happened the last time this country had a draft.

The use of a draft is for emergency purposes. Last time it was not an emergency and Cindy Sheehan was unopposed.

Sorry, but if my dog were trapped, I'd do everything in my power to get to him.

Call it stupid, if you will. I really don't care.
