Who's to Blame? Let's ask Mayor Nagin about this:

Maybe Mayor Nagin would like to explain this picture before he and the rest of his democratic fellow travelers continue to blast the fed's.

An aerial view of flooded school buses in a lot, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in New Orleans, LA. The flood is a result of Hurricane Katrina that passed through the area last Monday.(AP Photo/Phil Coale)

I said it from day 1. Why wouldn't you want to get every vehicle possible out of the city? I have 3 vehicles, I would have been trying to get someone to drive the other 2 out. I wonder where the Mass Transit buses are?

I just heard on WABC radio that an "angry" mayor was to meet with President Bush. After seeing the picture of all those flooded buses, I am outraged that this incompetent of all incompetents has the temerity to feign anger. He should hang his head in shame along with that Dimwitted Governor. Bring on the congressional hearings to allocate blame and punish the local and state people who are responsible for this disaster.

My brother is in the medical field in northern LA. He is appalled that they didn't evacuate the hospitals on Friday or Saturday. He said many people in intensive care and newborns are probably dying because there is no power, etc, for their function.

What kind of hospital sitting in a KNOWN hurricane zone has no sort of emergency plan for something like this? They should all have at least a 14 DAY supply of diesel fuel, and generators and backup generators to prevent power from going out. These hospitals in NO are just as bad, if not worst, then the inept govt. officials who rule over LA.

Sorry you saw the bad part of town (and you can't tell me your restaurant experience isn't repeated in LA, NY, Miami, Chicago and other cities), but you seem to be a lot like most of the media, equating the worst side with everyone in New Orleans. Had you seen some of the non-FQ neighborhoods, and met some of the people, you would have seen an entirely different picture. Thankfully, the fate of New Orleans is not in your hands.

(And guessing the feces you saw was in the FQ? Always a problem there, and probably it was from dogs, but I wouldn't state that absolutely. One of the worst problems in the FQ are the TOURISTS from elsewhere who think they can get drunk/high and run wild in the FQ. To a degree, they can, but it's one reason residents avoid the area.)

Notice how the water is only up to the wheel wells....if they're diesel buses, they could probably be used even now.

I'm not too sure they will re-elect him. I saw a bunch of Black residents on the news yesterday shouting "F--- Nagin". And another on Tuesday night saying, "Nagin didn't do nothing for us." I think they figured out one person who dropped the ball, even if the news anchors can't.

They purposely did not get people on buses to get them out of town because they waited too long to do it and it would have created such gridlock on the roads that nobody would get out and tens of thousands would have been sitting ducks when the storm hit.

Yeah that's it. It's a conspiracy I tell you it was invented by Democrats to put Bush to shame. Exactly where would you have 'taken' these people Einstein? No other cities were offering to take refugees then. They weren't expecting they would have had to. You're talking about tens of thousands of people. Would they just have ridden them around on these buses until they ran out of gas?

For the last time, it was no one's fault. Not Bush, not the mayor, the governor, or anyone else. All we are seeing is the ineptitude of government at every level and their failure to deal with a serious situation. Well I suppose you could blame the idiots that originally built the levees or maybe the ancestors of the current citizens for not moving decades ago. I know let's blame God for sending the hurricane. Yeah that's it!!

Nagin said, "Get every Greyhound bus in the country and get them moving."

Thanks, Michigander. That tells quite a tale. He had a full tool set, but chose to let them rust.

As I understand it, they didn't actually cut the funding, they cut what they asked for. Let me know if I'm wrong about this, but I thought I heard someone say the funding was actually increased over last year's budget, it just wasn't as much as they asked for.

That was pointed out on a thread last night by usmcobra but how do you find out if anyone even tried? Or how to suggest it? And post #40 by pettifogger says this:

Nagin was quoted in that local radio interview -- replayed on CNN and other networks -- that there had been a proposal to use school buses. "School buses!" he ranted with disdain, "School buses! Where are the Greyhounds? Why isn't every bus company coming here to rescue these people."

On election day, they were driven to the polls...On evacuation day, they had to fend for themselves

Outstanding tagline! There always seems to be plenty of buses in the inner city on election day.
