I was kicked out of my church choir (can't carry a tune with a bucket, and have no sense of rhythm), and you know how desperate church choirs are for members.

The failure of a democrat-led state is why the media is out in force trying to point fingers at Bush, when they all know the reality of the situation...their own failures cause many more to die than would have if they hadn't been slow to react.

Bingo.

Lots of questionable smells in the air around FR lately.

Yep, seems like we have some operatives using one of the most prolific boards on the internet to spew their bs so it can be attributed to FR/conservative base.

Your quite correct. I suppose it was my reaction to the fact that race is playing a huge part in the media coverage. The images are coming in of young black men looting... and giddy at the prospect of getting away with a cartful of A1 sauce. It's embarrassing as an American to see this and to know the rest of the world is watching.

Even though the images are there, nobody is talking about this. And the so-called black leaders are strangely silent about this. Although there are cynics, and those without conscience that will politicize, it would be extremely hard for even Jackson and Sharpton to politicize a disaster immediately after it has happened. I wish they would have been forced to issue a statement as soon as the looting began so that they will be motivated to be a part of the solution instead of part of the blame game.

Then again, maybe I give them too much credit.

Sorry, but you'll have to excuse me for considering these comments very wussy.

Sorry, but you'll have to excuse me for not giving a rat's hind end what you think.

Brown needs to be replaced on the spot. I heard he has been fired before for incompetence in an unrelated field. He has just been on tv all day the last few days getting battered with facts, and because he is on tv all day, he doesn't have the freaking time to actually know what is going on.

Promote his deputy, whomever that is. Inform them that they will only be allowed to give press conferences 2-3 times a day. Brown is on every freaking network, continually all day. He is not doing well there. If he is not going to actually lead the agency, he could at least be competent in PR work. He's not. The President needs to fire him on the spot.

I guess the question is: Who's driving the bus?

Nobody. There's nobody driving the bus. The President should not be driving the bus. He needs to support the driver.

But there is nobody on the ground who seems to know what the hell is going on.

Relief should have begun locally, but it apparently didn't. They know the needs of their city better than the feds and our federal system of government has laws that enforces that division of power and responsibility. Law enforcement is a local and state function. I've not seen it operating at all in NO. Gangs broke into stores, took guns and used them against rescuers, whose actions had to be stopped. Just think how this entire crisis would have worked differently had local and state law enforcement done their job. Yes, they needed help from the National Guard, but they should have been doing their job until the NG got there. FEMA has a huge role to play, but local and state efforts should have gotten relief efforts started.

It's not the plans, per se, that count either. It is the active and continually engaged process of involving all levels of authority and action that are needed in probable forseeable circumstance in the planning. In making up contigenecy plans, evcuation plans, communitcaion plans, setting rules as to who has what authority in what circumstance, etc.

Having ACTIVE worksessions, drills, training. Doing so year-after.

Otherwise, on the bad side -- Creating a bureaucracy of "planners" who make plans in a vacuum -- that is, with little involvement or drills with the people and groups who would actually be involved does NO good.

For it is not the "plans" that matter -- what counts, what works, what is most effective in this kind of disaster is the training, the personal interlocking of associations developed in drills and worksessions, the command and field awareness of resources and procedures developed in those drills and work-sessions that enables a effective and marvelously adaptible response.

"Who's the face that inspires confidence here? "

LOL! That'll be the NO mayor. While the storm was still going on, I heard one local newscaster compparing him to Guiliani and saying how he was going to have HIS Guiliani moment. He failed. He not only failed he's got a lot of deaths on his hands.

The magnitude of the disaster, and the law and order breakdown, has the whole nation and the whole world watching and waiting for words of wisdom from the leader of the nation.

Again, please understand I have an opinion--I am just saying that better not to say anything at all than give short, poorly prepared remarks.

The media and the world is waiting for a full report from the leader of the nation, offering hope that law and order will be restored and that proper relief is on the way. The RATs will have a filed day with this

And your "opinion" is to parrot the DNC/MSM talking points.

Seriously, I wouldn't even pay her any attention anymore. She seems to be a nasty little harpie who childishly goes off her rocker if you dare to question anything of her beloved President. Too many of her around to even bother with.

Haley Barbour.

He's been stellar in this. While he doesn't have the charisma of a Presidential contender...I'd bet you $1000 if he handles this as well as he is now through the end...the nomination in '08 is his if he wants it.

Saturday before Katrina hit

What more could he do at that point?

That order mobilized everything.

If it's been handled incompetently since then...

That's a whole separate discussion.

In an interview Friday on NBC's "Today," Federal Emergency Management Agency director Michael Brown stood behind the massive federal relief effort that's under way.

"I understand the mayor's frustration. ... We have been having a continuous flow of commodities into the Superdome, there were five trucks arriving last night to feed well over 50,000 people.

"We're also diverting supplies to the convention center which I learned about yesterday and that area. ... This is an absolutely catastrophic disaster," he said.

Brown is making an ass of himself. He just learned about the Convention Center yesterday? Is he waiting for the media to tell him where the shelters are? Why not just hire journalists to do Brown's job?

And five trucks to feed over 50,000 people?

Agreed, with one small inclusion, it's also in some part, a failure of personal initiative and responsibility.

Yes, that is true, but the *one* thing I have not seen the crybaby whiners on this and other threads -- who seem bent on behaving like contestants on a "Who Can Blame Bush the Most" show -- blame Bush for is not imbuing the downtrodden, the sick, the lame, the dirty, the naked, the rapists and drug-dealers, the criminals and welfare dependent with "personal initiative and responsibility." (Although, I suppose that will come in time.)

Perhaps I will start: "Bush talked a lot about faith and the power of faith to change lives. But that was just talk! Why are rapists still rapists? Shouldn't President Bush put his money where his mouth was? Why didn't he fund Prison Fellowship the way he funds the PA? If every criminal, gang-banger and rapist discovered Christ, there would have been no crime in NO -- no looting, no shooting. If President Bush was a more effective communicator we would live in a garden of peace and unselfishness. It is all his fault!" (Sarcasm alert!)

This is why you teach your kids when they are young how to care for themselves...A result of the nanny state where the government doesn't ween people off the government teet early enough, the results are grumbling that we didn't get there fast enough...We didn't do enough...It's all Bush's fault.

"Don’t you think the state of Louisiana bears the brunt of responsibility for at least to have had a plan for adequate shelters and evacuation of New Orleans in case of catastrophe such as Katrina?"

Former LA Rep Livingstone was on Fox a little while ago and told it like it is. Greg asked him about the budgeting - Rep L said that they've been budgeting and getting money since 1965 for the levees, but only planned for a CAT 3, he wondered about the HS plan that the local and state officials had in place and said that they didn't have a plan in place - don't remember all he said, but IMHO he did a good job.
