Blanco demands apology 9:15 p.m. An angry Gov. Kathleen Blanco demanded that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., apologize for his statement that it might not make sense to rebuild New Orleans. It was unthinkable, Blanco said, that Hastert would kick us when were down. I demand an immediate apology. At a press conference Thursday night, she said that 300 soldiers from the Arkansas National Guard arrived in New Orleans fresh from Iraq and are under orders to restore order from the hoodlums. She said of the soldiers: They have M-16s and they are locked and loaded. These troops know how to shoot to kill . . . and I expect they will. U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, said that 1,500 people had gathered on the Chalmette ferry landing awaiting evacuation, possibly by ferry, to Algiers. Making a plea for those refugees to receive food and water now, Melancon estimated that about 100 are dead, possibly from dehydration. Officials also noted that an additional 80 police officers are now on the streets of New Orleans from elsewhere around the country, bringing some stability to the Superdome. A doctor in University Hospital telephoned a Baton Rouge TV station, hoping to call attention to the desperate plight at his hospital. The hospital was running low on food and water, and had no power, the doctor said. We have 160 patients in the hospital and they are actively dying, he said.

She's right. Hasert should have waited till everyone was evacuated before he said it.
Blanko came out of her coma? Talk about PVS.

Took her 5 days to issue that order, IF SHE IN FACT ACTUALLY ISSUED IT.
Since SHE can't call up AR guard forces, I have to assume they were orderd in by Homeland Security and she was forced
to sign orders under threat of being removed.
Men... remember the characteristics of the enemy...
They will be between 3 feet and 8 feet tall
They will smell like a sewer
They will be carrying boxes of Nikes/Beer/Jewelry/Plasma TVs
They will yell "F the Po-leece!" when they see you
There is no bag limit
300 is far too few.
Hasert should not have said that at all. The citizens of NO love their city, and I am sure this idea is not something they would welcome.
Like they say in Real Estate....
Location Location Location
A below sea level hole next to the ocean in an area that
sees fairly frequent hurricanes...and floods..?
Rebuild with US taxpayers money...
I just as soon give it to the Palestinians
He's protecting the nation. We don't need to help rebuild a city that's below sea level. That's the best thing for the people of NO as well. They certainly don't need another catastrophe like this.
A week from now will we have a black Cindy Sheehan blaming the death of her son on trigger-happy National Guard troops on orders from the (D) Governor to "shoot to kill?"
Nah, if the troops kill anyone it will be due to their post traumatic stress from being in Iraq - BUSH's FAULT!
"An angry Gov. Kathleen Blanco demanded that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., apologize for his statement that it might not make sense to rebuild New Orleans. It was unthinkable,"
well as long as she has her priorities in order, things shold be alright.
Forget about rescuing survivors and stopping looters and thugs. Issue a press release or get on tv to demand an apology!
I am with Hastert, and it is about time she face her complete and criminal incompetance.
NOLA needs to become a landfill site. That's all that's left.
Just listening to re-run of Dennis Prager show, and he had a guest on who was talking about the disaster and topic of other cities that have been elevated ,, Seattle and sacramento are two examples, but these were done years ago.
Cost alone would be prohibitive.
also not sure of what the cost would be to rebuild the levee system for CAT 4/5 hurricanes in the future but it would have to be enormous.

Make half of it an Urban Combat training site, and the other half a field artillery impact area.
I have no doubt they love their city. Do they love it enough to foot the bill to build it in a place that is susceptible to a similar occurrence, or do they love it enough to ask me to pay for it. I am happy to help in this time of great need and unimaginable suffering. But don't demand that I finance someone rebuilding there, because the same will be demanded of me again, or my children. And the children of those who move back will face the same threat again.
Blanco demands apology from Hastert, a Republican. Did she also demand an apology from the the school superintendent Ora Watson?
"Watson, in a telephone interview, also said that 'it may be prudent' for Orleans teachers in the system to seek work elsewhere. She could not guarantee that teachers who do not find other jobs will continue receiving paychecks from the Orleans system without interruption.
"'I would encourage them not to wait,' she said."
