Most of the rolling stock is upright and on the rails, most of the track looks like it will be OK once the water is gone. Too early to tell if there was enough flow to scour out under the ties, but the fact the cars aren't tipped over is a good sign.

Track may not be that sound. Check out the diesel units on the right top row of the fourth picture. -- and that track is on the highest ground...

That looks to me like the string is partially shunted from one line to another. I'm no expert, though.

Although 6th from the left is clearly tipped a bit - good catch.

Those boxcars look like little matchbox cars thrown on the rug by an angry two year old!

Too bad people with dial up won't get to see them.

I'm on dialup, XP is downloading updates, and the pictures came through fine. What a mess. Those barges are going the wrong way, and my new VCR is in that white container launched into the woods.

That's what I was thinking - how many of those cars contain damaged goods which will never reach the stores who ordered them.

Wait until the education process begins as to what is meant by "FOB Origin, FA Destination".

One thing about rails is they will all pitch in and do whatever it takes to get the railroad going again. It is a hard job but the ones that last are true rails and feel a "ownership" of the rails.

However, the replacement costs for those damaged goods - should help the economy!

Lots of containers of goods there. Hopefully there won't be permanent price inflation because of this.

I know nothing about the railroad business but shouldn't they have moved these trains out of the way of the incoming hurricane?

No, the rolling stock is in pretty good order. I did see one or two cars 'leaning' and there is discussion upthread about one or two of the locomotives, but all in all, the only big questions are the roadbed and whether any of the bridges need work.

The stuff scattered around are containers and truck trailers. You can see some containers on flat cars that have been blown around.

Probably not. The weight of the cars helps hold the track in place as the water runs through the yard. The ballast may be washed out but the rail and ties are still there and new ballast can de dumped.
