28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Where exactly are they planning to put these folks? I know that there is a LOT of homebuilding up north of Frisco and Plano areas.

I heard a bunch are being taken to Reunion Arena. I can't imagine that it could hold them all though.

There was a thread about a month ago about 10K empty homes in the Detriot area and how the Mayor wanted to do something with them.

I remember because I posted something stupid like

"Friends don't let Friends move to Detriot"

I saw video of some young woman in MS yesterday who was sitting there dejected and trying to exclaim the horror of her couch floating away and her entertainment center having flipped over and smashed.

It was a bit too materialistic considering the potential loss of life around her.

Arthel Neville at the superdome. she drove into the city, then took a boat to the superdome.

Mary Landrieu isn't used to being asked hard questions by a news media that's supposed to be in her back pocket.

I saw that piece, and the woman said that the National Guard provided more help, particularly medical help, than the (I assume "local") medical professionals who were either assigned or volunteered to tend to medical needs inside the Dome.

It came off as a matter of indifference, not of incompetence - although I agree O'Reilly did lead the interview with the question, "Was it incompetence?"

No doubt some ugly scenes and incidents are happening, and my heart really goes out to the innocent victims.

OMG - thank you for posting this update. Prayers offered for the NOPD. They are in a seemingly impossible situation...losing their homes, no communication to perform their duties, the lawless animals are rampant.

I read earlier today, they are being resourceful by siphoning fuel from abandoned vehicles to maintain their patrols. God bless them all.

The tourists are walking around there and as soon as these individuals see them, they're being preyed upon

This is so disgusting...it sounds quite organized .I hope that serious force is being arrayed and that after sundown these thugs are put down like dogs.

But when the next big quake hits San Francisco or LA, are we going to tell them not to rebuild because their area is an earthquake danger?

WE should

They're probably crying over their lost family members. MS will likely have thousands dead.

I am not excusing the stealing some of the cops did, but as I understand it, the NO police have the right by law to "take" whatever they need to exist and do their work.

I'm one that was only sympathetic with those taking food and water. Until last night...I did see a lady carrying some shoes and the reported asked her if she thought that was right? She is walking through knee deep water. She says, "I can't walk around in this water in my bare feet, they will get all cut up." I had to add shoes to my list of necessities last night. With all the stuff floating around out there the lady had a point.

So in isolated areas where people from NO are dumped, they're having the same problems as they are in the city?

I realized that. I've been misunderstood because I forgot to put a sarcasm tag on something that I thought was obvious that no one could take seriously. I know what I'm thinking but that doesn't always translate to the page.
