Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Make a Bloody Mary for me and don't take up space with celery

How I wish you were all here to have a drink with me. Mr. Peach has never seen me drunk, but today just might be a first.

EIGHT MILE long convoy shown rolling into NOLA

Missed that, SE Mom. Is it a "good" convoy or a "bad" convoy? Was momentarily distracted by politician quoting scripture...IMHO, people really shouldn't wait until there is a disaster to "get religion." Makes people like me get all "squishy" and "cynical-like." Especially when they act like religion & faith & plaques of the 10 Commandments is like having acid thrown in their faces under "normal" circumstances.

But, that's just me...mileage may vary.

CORRECTION cat 3 not 4

"where levee broke is as good as it was going to get [in terms of being built]
it was rated for cat *3*
[but] intensity of storm exceeded capacity of levee
so next question [we are asked] why cat 3 and not 4 or 5
corps answer, we knew the [*3*] capacity of this levee, and that is why mayor others evacuated the city
had they not done that, loss would have been much greater
also, war in Iraq has NOT impacted corp funding levels"

I remembered her saying the cord was long enough to get to the porch?! So her land line worked? How did she get O'reilly's number? Or how did O'reilly get in touch with her?

Funny you should mention that, I saw the interview and thought the same thing, LOL. That was very strange.

BTW, I am frankly getting very tired of O’Reilly and his attitude during this whole crisis. I am not am O’Reilly fan, but do watch him. However, this week he is worst than usual, IMO. He is short with people, cutting them off, and his arrogant, condescending attitude has become so bad I have stopped watching him.

Russell Crowe may be a jerk, but he said something great. He's tired of all of the celebrity relief efforts, they should just right the check or volunteer and shut the hell up about it.

This is sickening that the Black Caucus would criticize the President and start quoting the Bible. This is absolutely sickening, blaming President Bush on national TV for all of the misery! Nothing like "working together" in a time of extreme crisis... :-(

The Black Caucus is trying to deal with a politically very uncomfortable (for them) issue, in that by far the worst actors in this whole mess are looters who are almost all black people.

Part of it is a legitimate concern that this fact will spread to an incorrect assumption that "all black people" are potential looters. So I'll give them slack on that point.

However, the fact of the matter is that the Black Caucus itself must shoulder a lot of the blame for the fact that these looters are overwhelmingly black, inner-city thugs. The policies, recommendations, and years of poverty pimping by the Black Caucus and their politicl allies have been a major factor in the development of the psychotic culture that pervades the inner city.

They simply cannot afford to have an honest discussion of why it is that the looters are predominantly black. It would destroy their political position.

Might as well not dilute it with tomato juice, either.

Good comments. I totally agree.

I think Bush placed his trust in some incompetent jerks.
