28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Show me where I have bashed Bush? You are reading something into my words that aren't there.

I HAVE grasped the enormity of this tragedy.

My husband just left for work..he trains our Nation's C-130 crews. I KNOW they can airdrop supplies and water..Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

This transcends politics for me.

You obviously have no clue as to the breadth and scope of this disaster. In the earlier hours, I was quite critical of Nagin, but no more. I reuse to criticise either democrat or republican.

This is bigger than anything we've ever seen.

It's bigger than us.

We can't "Control" it. Nagin can't. Blanco can't. The fed's can't. And it's nobody's fault.

The president can't snap his fingers and get water to everyone who needs it, everywhere they need it. I don't know where you live, but NOLA is TWICE the size of my city, and my city is quite large.

I'm sick of EVERYONE at FR acting like this was ever manageable, by anyone.

Everyone will do the best that we can from here on out. When this is all over, we'll look at this and learn from it.

I'm not saying this was a judgement from God, but every now and then mankind gets too full of itself until something happens to show us just how insignficant we are in the face of God, or Nature, whatever.

This is bigger than us. It is quite telling that people are saying they can't understand this is happening in the US. Maybe now we will get it. We are not so wealthy and powerful that we are immune from disaster.

I'm sorry, this is bigger than us.

There's so much that could be done.

Why didn't they follow plans?

Who's the Fema IC for the NO area? Why isn't he working hand in glove with the locals?

Well I am glad some get the idea that the blame should lie with the local's. We are using up a lot of energy bashing and blaming and it is not doing those poor people any good.

If people are so disturbed, then maybe they should just go clean their house or help someone in need in their own neighborhood.

Just the fact that the Astrodome is full means that something is happening and evacuations are taking place.

With a scope this wide, they're not going to save everybody.

It's like the Titanic, some folks will not make it into the lifeboats, or out of the city. Just the fact of any disaster on this scale.

You all probably know this but FNC periodically that says some NO police officers are walking off the job.

Over 30 officers have quit over the last 3 days. Out of 160 officers in his district maybe 55 or 60 are working. He hasn't seen several since Sunday. HQ is closed, evacuated. No phones to contact them.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/

That from 12:43 AM, Thursday, Sept 1 ...

The NO Police force is likely as crippled as the city in general.

WLBT-3 out of Jackson MS has video of the complete destruction along the MS coastal communities of Waveland and Bay St. Louis.

Particularly striking, also noted by the reporter as very touching, are the U.S. flags planted in sand and mud where nothing else stands.

WLBT-3 Skycopter 3 on the Coast: Third Tour link is in the middle of the page, next to the little pic of the coastline.

Yes, you can drop supplies. But, I've read there were people shooting at them yesterday while trying to do so at the roof top of hospital. Boats stopped because they were being shot at and boats being stolen. Trucks en-route with supplies were being shot at. Makes it difficult at best.

90,000 sq mi was the figure I thought I recalled Chertoff using yesterday. Thanks for the confirmation. That number is mind-boggling.

They did make a bad situation worse. Blanco knew how bad NO Orleans was getting. Why didn't she do the martial law thing day before yesterday?

Why didn't fema make sure they got some communication channels set up with the people in NO they needed to work with?

Lots of why didn'ts running through my head this morning.

The unfortunate thing about this situation is that NO did not have a plan. The mayor and the governor failed miserably.

The Federal government had to take over the operation when they saw that the mayor and governor had no plan and lost control of the situation.

This was too late. Now the Fed will do the work that NO and LA should have done.

The only thing I can fault the Federal government on is not knowing how incompetent the mayor and the governor are beforehand.

Good things will happen today but the President will continue to take the brunt of the criticism and the media will continue to show dead bodies in the street, people dying, looters and people with no food and water. They will continue to interview people who feel like the gov't owes something to them.

We are going to have a tough period in this nation. The recovery is going to be bad enough but I think we are going to have a divided nation over this and the liberals will exploit what is happening and not help.

The Dems were worried about their black voting bloc last election but after the media and the libs spin this, I don't think they will have to worry anymore.

I pray that things will turn around today and I pray that this will not create a more divided nation.

I hope people are praying for this nation, the refugees, our President, and the Federal Gov't. They all need it.

Anybody out there familiar with helicopter ops?

Seeing a LOT of smoke over NO -- how bad can it get before helicopters are grounded?

Can any of the elected officials of that city spell p-r-o-f-e-s-s-i-o-n-a-l?

c-o-r-r-u-p-t-i-o-n

True. In New Orleans, corruption is institutional and has been elevated to the professional level.
